9BLIND - A NEGATIVE RESPONSE TO CHANGE (CD REVIEW)

Edmonton based 9Blind have been tearing up the venues for sometime now and last year released a great ep, now with a new album ready to unleash it seems that the time is right for them to branch out and show the world what they are made of.
'Promises' kicks off with a very punchy riff and drum kick, but what shines through here is the melody that flows throughout and the superb vocal delivery from Mark.
A more commercial sound is prevelant with 'Cause & Effect' and the first taste that with the right backing this edge to their music could gain them huge amounts of radio play all over the world and also prove that it's not just the Americans that can make this kind of music!!
Whilst 'Immune' returns to their heavier sound i come to the first stand out track for me with '30 Unexplained Minutes', starting with a simple haunting riff it moves into a powerhouse of drums and guitars and screaming vocals, yet it retains a moody and dark element that holds the song throughout.
The chorus is catchy and is a definate singalong "Lay down your arms, it doesn't need to be this hard, i've apologised a thousand times, dont waste time chasing white lies, dont waste time proving love dies".
Sample's of Mrs Thatcher and Churchill mixed in with various other politicians under a great acoustic piece make up the instrumentle 'I Thought You Should Know, which then leads into the screamfest that is 'Lest We Forget' with its angry and aggressive delivery and an almost Corey Taylor tone when singing the line "I stare into each photograph and start to feel you crawl back, i stare into each photgraph in vain".
'My Heart Bleeds' has a slightly anthemic quality to it and again it is the vocals the pushes this above the average with great conviction.
Next up is the quite stunning 'Salt In Scars' a song which i believe almost didnt make it to the album.Mark scraems "Wake Up!" and the song moves into a brutal yet highly commercial rock song that has HIT written all over it, very well composed and top notch playing from all concerned here!!!
'Until December' closes the album with some style, a beautiful acoustic intro moves in to a ballad like song with great harmony and emotion, even a neat guitar solo and a shout it out finale is thrown in.

DUSTEROID
Awesome doom/stoner rock of the finest order!
The power that comes through from this trio is stunning, just think Cathedral/St.Vitus and blam you have it.
Some brilliant guitar solos mix with intricate bass playing and some great Keith Moon style drumming.
I.C.O.N
Returning for a second time to london and this time armed with their debut album as well.
The northern metallers put on a headline show great riffs and soaring vocals, this is NWOTM at its finest, this nods back with respect to the glory days of heavy metal when frontmen flicked the horns and took their music to the audience.
These guys deliver 100% pure metal entertainment with some amazing songs that get the crowd going, guitarist scott not content with the stage takes his headbanging riffage right into the audience.
STAND UP GUY
Irish band who have been making headways on the mainland with a mini tour, ended up in the gaff and blew the roof off with their unique take on metal.
They pulled off a 40 minute set with ease and won over the whole audience, there was great melody in their songs and some awesome metal moments.
9BLIND
Wow were these guys on form tonight, a much more aggressive set than the last time i saw them
and bassist joe seemed somewhat possessed and kept jumping into the audience.
Its a good mixture of metalcore influence and well constructed rock songs, hey any vocalist who wears a Doors t-shirt is alright in my books !
HOSTILE DAWN
Heavy fucking metal with a capital "B" for beer.
The lads know how to have fun and joke in between songs, they are infectious, the music is in your face hardcore metal with shouty vocals and the quality is uncompromising.
They are masters of their craft and perform to high standard not normally associated with this genre.

ACHILLA ACOUSTIC SHOW, FROM GREAT HEIGHT, '77 Live At The Gaff 25.08.09
FROM GREAT HEIGHT

THE GAFF, HOLLOWAY ROAD 25.08.09
'77
Tonights evening of diverse talent kicks off with the Spanish band '77.
Now there was a slight hint of Ac/Dc in their set and performance, in fact it was a whole lotta dc.
A quite breathtaking set based around the early days of Bon Scott's rocking outfit, yet they only did 'TNT' the rest were original songs though again pure ac/dc.
FROM GREAT HEIGHT
Playing a shorter set this evening due the fact that their bassist was still on holiday.
Depping for said bassist was Joe Simms from 9blind, and he did a fantastic job.
FGH seem to grow on each audience they play to and it was a stunning set, the Pink Floyd cover attracting the attention of those who were not watching at the time.
They ended their set with 'Split Seconds' and 'Initial' both of which gained a few headbanging and sing-a-long moments.
Watch out for them over the next 12 months because they are going to reach a "Great Height" and their neo-prog rock/metal hybrid will continue to win over new fans all the time.
ACHILLA ACOUSTIC SHOW
For those of you who dont know Achilla are a London based Symphonic/Progressive rock group fronted by the Martamaria, a singer with a world record beating voice.
We were treated to a huge set and all those songs that we were used to as electric full on metal were suddenley turned upside down and given the most amazing makeover.
Songs like 'Arashi' and 'Devils Eyes' have become revitalised and reborn, Dan's guitar playing is as breathtaking as Marta's voice.
Added tonight was a brand new song that will be performed by the usual band soon, and a few inspired covers from Alice In Chains 'Down In A Hole', Nightwish 'Kuolema teke Tajteilian' (Which Marta sang in Finnish and frankley blew Tarja off the planet) and a quite moving cover of Metallica (YUK!!) 'Nothing Else Matters'.
So endeth an awesome and diverse evening. Here's to the next one.

9BLIND - IMMUNE EP (CD Review)

G-reg (Drums)
Nice to hear someone sing as opposed to shout and growl, with much of this Hardcore/Alt thats what you normally get, but then 9Blind are not your run of the mill band.
What we get here is 4 well written and produced songs full of melody, riffs and some pretty aggressive drumming with quite piercing double pedaling.
For melodic metal then "My Heart Bleeds" rates highly as one to play late at night, but if you want full on metal with a little layed back breakdown to catch your breath then "Promises" is the song for you, providing you play very loud!
The only track i didnt like was "Un-Angel" it was way too slow and melodic for me, well put together though, but not for me.

What a way to kick off a friday, this is some serious punked up metal fury delivered with some style.Take early AFI and mix it up with the Misfits and early Nirvana then give it that unique "London" twist and you have one helluva band.Caked in blood (Which i didnt notice at the time due to poor eyesight and wearing shades!!).They blew the place away and got everybody rocking from the first chord to the last.
MAN OF KIN
They may have been on earlier than they are used to but they still delivered a headline quality set, almost every song in their set is now rapidly heading towards the phrase "classic" and with audience participation throughout, it would seem that (at the moment at least) they can do no wrong. They do a great covers medley again (with the exception of bloody metallica) and the new song 'Sequence Of Lies' is growing on me already.
FROM GREAT HEIGHT
They may have shocked a few tonight, their brand of Metal is clearly marked Prog with vocalist Adam paying his respects to Peter Gabriel, but fuck these guys are good, and i mean really good, not only do they excell at what they do but they do it with a class that sets them way above any in their chosen field.
But dont think that this was all 'intresting' (As my black metal loving friend Kyron said) or "too intelligent for a metal gig" as i overheard someone else say, because they entertained and there was some headbanging (hooray :).
We got a new song debuted tonight called 'It Died A Quiet Death' and they ended their set with the awesome "Initial".
9BLIND
The third Enfield act on the bill tonight and representing a different musical genre as well, this time shouty in-your-face hardcore metal. These guys were like a bomb going off, you see after FGH everything was nice and calm then "Bang" people jumpimg around, mosh pits and lots of shouting.Performing with hi-energy songs they seem to play for a single purpose "FUN" and they deliver 100%
They ended their set with a cover of (Bloody) metallica's 'Memory Remains' and they did it very well and got everybody singing the Marianne Faithfull "La La's".
AFFLUENZA
Headlining set from the band who never put a foot wrong, tonight they started with a new song, normally a dangerous move for this lot, no problem.Just another great performance, it was however noticable that singer Al was somewhat possessed tonight by "The Claw" he did however manage to find the demon and pull off his best on stage performance for sometime.
Just love those songs "Dead Days","Affluenza Strain" and "Scorched Earth Policy" every time i hear them played, the guitar, bass and drums is just perfect.
