This band really surprised me with their blend of Hawkwind/Stranglers/Joy Division and Pink Floyd, to hear this style played with such conviction was quite something!Great musicians and a good vocalist performing huge songs including a 10 minute finisher, it was very entertaining.

Just cannot get enough of the New Zealand trio, they make such weird and wonderful music that seems to blend nursery rhyme lyrics with melodic harmony and death metal!You cant help but love it, and despite the fact that the band were still recovering from a night out they played a faultless set!!!
KYRBGRINDER
One of the most powerfull and entertaining rock trios in the uk, great songs with plenty of chances to singalong and one of the best drummers in the world centre stage with a mic strapped to his head.Some new songs from the fourthcoming album were unveiled tonight including one about stupid americans (Very good!!!!!).

Now this band were quite a revelation, an instrumental band, playing long progressive almost jazz tinged compositions, it was good stuff but i did kind of expect some vocals somewhere just to break it up a bit.

The farewell show for drummer Gary who is leaving because of work commitments.It was going to be an emotional and explosive show and it did not fail to live up to expectations.It is perhaps most noticable with Adams performance as to just how much the band have matured this year, his stage presence and vocal attack (yes attack!) are totally different from even a few months ago, the stage becomes his and he has a dark charisma that carrys it off to perfection.But let us not forget guitarist Mikey who stalks the stage weilding his guitar like a weapon and headbanging at every heavy powerchord, and his playing is amazing, paul of course on bass moves and smiles all the time whilst holding down some solid riffs.
I dont think i have ever seen gary so happy behind the kit, very relaxed, it is a shame he is going as he has helped shape the band over the last 2 years, but the band have Tim primed and ready to go.
The set included a great (but short) Pink Floyd cover with adam screaming his heart out and stomping the stage, masque wearing to great effect and possibley the greatest encore in the history of rock music ever, err well actually a quick rendition of a Barry Mannilow classic!!!

EL SCHLONG - THE BADDIES ARE COMING (Cd Review)

It is difficult to place this New Zealand band in any one genre, having been based here for nearly two years and playing on the mainly metal scene, they have built up a cult following, yet they are pretty unique musically and go far beyond metal.
For want of a description i would suggest that if the Bonzo Dog Band were a black metal band then they might sound like this!
So throwing caution to the wind i hit play........
'The Baddies Are Coming' starts with a full on metal riff then goes into this nice happy tune, then more metal, its rhythmic and awesome, superb guitar playing and death metal vocal.
'Bungface' is fairly generic death metal, but with great breakdowns.
Some quite dark and disturbing lyrics accompany 'The Room', "There's no escape from this nightmare of boarded up windows" the music is outstanding, just brillianly composed and executed.
'Composting' is a song about, well, compost, it screams like a satanic metal song but its about gardening!
Were comic legend Spike Milligan to have written one of his funny poems about a cow and set it to avante garde rock then 'The Cow Jumped Over The Moon' would be the result.It has a gothic tone about it like an old Siouxie & Banshees track.
'Swing Accident' has Leah sounding like Angela Gossow over a brooding powerchord heavy song, but then of course we get a weird nice jazzy bit thrown in for good measure.
The next song is a long masterpiece about a man and his slippers !Nothing short of genius writing wise and musically this is a quintessential El Schlong song in that it has all the different musical elements in one place.
We come to the last song which i think is about climbing a hill or something like that.
Again such wonderful lyrics and great music and some remarkable trumpet playing.
Rating 10/10

Classic stoner influenced hard rock like Blue Cheer jamming with Ten Years After with a touch of Cathedral thrown in!They may be a side project band from the bassist of Blood Island Raiders but they are a force in their own right.They played a huge set full of massive riffs, pounding drums and some serious basswork.

You cant quite put your finger on this band, its like death metal and jazz rock blended with humour.All put together by three very talented musicians, they create a great sound and have amazing stage presence.They entertain on a major scale and are a band to watch and enjoy.
KYRBGRINDER
And talking of entertaining, wow, with the drummer taking centre front stage and doubling up as vocalist they too score big on the visual element.But it is true showmanship and really outstanding musicanship that they score top marks, vocalist/Drummer Johanne is amazing his vocals echo Seal back in the days when he was considered rock and former Journey singer Gregg Rolie, whilst his drumming (and stick twirling skills) leave his contemporaries wimpering in a darkend corner.
Add to this solid bass work and some great guitar solos, you have a perfect blend of melodic hard rock, that leaves me to wonder why this band are still unsigned.
It goes without saying that they brought the house down!

MALLORY KNOX, MURDER MILE, CAVILRY, EL SCHLONG Live At The Gaff 05.06.09 (Gig Review)

EL SCHLONG
A very weird band indeed, hailing from New Zealand this 3 piece mix up strange influences and ideas creating a sound like Primus jamming with Mayhem.Great harmony vocals to death metal screams, jazz rhythms and power metal bass, its all there and makes for great listening if you are open minded.
CAVILRY
Impressive rock trio who make a big noise, blending style and substance with equal measure.Catchy songs and big riffs go down a treat with the audience.
MURDER MILE
They pretty much bill themselves as a punk band, so thats what i was expecting, okay so they dont look punk but there is a touch of Dead Kennedys about them.
What we get is 40 minutes of pure entertainment, punk fuelled energy but with more than a hint of heavy metal, some great songs made to jump around too (that includes both singer and bassist who managed to fall/jump off stage).They also threw in a Jesus Lizard cover!
MALLORY KNOX
Playing without a doubt the best set i have ever seen from them, tonight they were on fire.It was a huge set full of amazing musicianship great vocals and Kit's swearing in between each song!
Highlights include "Drink,Fight,Fuck" , "Dont be Cruel" and the set closer "Asphyxiate " which finished with the dropping of trousers from Ben, Kit and Akis to reveal 'Mallory Fucking Knox' upon those sweet (and hairy - Hi Akis :) cheeks.
