Bob "Angelo" Sawyer - Iron Maiden And Praying Mantis: The Early Days. (Book Review)

If like me you have more than a passing interest in music history, perhaps and more significantly the way in which any given band or artist begins their eventually successful career, then this is very much one that does just that.

Okay, so Iron Maiden went on to be mega huge, but as with any band back before those awful TV talent shows, they paid their dues and put in the hard work in the pub’s and clubs.

What Bob does so well here is tell it as if he is talking directly to you, yes his time with the band was less than a year, but in that time he played over 50 gigs with them.
Here is relative detail he tells of the onstage theatrics of the pre DiAnno vocalist, the offstage highs and lows.
With previously unseen photographs and a very detailed list of gigs played, Bob gives us “most” of his stories and facts from his meticulous diaries.

After his stint with Maiden he moved onwards to Praying Mantis, once again he tells it like it was, highs and lows and then of course moves on to the famous Metal For Muthas tour.

Personally for me this was when both Maiden & Mantis were at their best and having witnessed them for myself it brought back some great memories!

The often hilarious backstage antics and the tension in the bands is very well and carefully documented here.

After his exit from Mantis Bob then joined Weapon (Nowadays Weapon UK), I was a bit disappointed that Bob did not give us a chapter on his time with them, but I guess the publishers wanted him to concentrate on the other two.

All this is interspersed with little anecdotes and some of Bob’s personal memories of bands he had himself seen.

A must have book not only for fans of the bands but for anyone who wants to be taken back to the days of Pub rock and the birth of NWOBHM.

Cannot believe it was March 2015 when I reviewed their last album, the band have grown a lot since then, played all over Europe and UK. Tony also spent a brief spell with Tytan.
Initially, the band were intending to simply start writing for the next album after Premonition. However, during the writing process, it became apparent that some of the tracks linked very well into a specific theme. After some discussion, it was decided by the band that this theme should be developed for the entire second album in the form of a concept album.

The other songs that didn’t fit with this theme could be released as an EP.
Recordings began in 2016 at Vatican Studios, the same studio where their previous album ‘Premonition’ was recorded.

However, due to re-development of the site, Vatican had to cease all recording projects and the EP was put on hold. In addition, drummer Fraser Powell left the band at the end of 2017 and so auditions for a new drummer had to be held.
A replacement, Alan Mogg (Ghostfire), joined the band in 2018.
The band started rehearsing and looking for a new studio.
Recording of the EP resumed at HVR Studios in Ipswich, with Danny B mixing and engineering. The Deep are delighted with the results and intend recording the second album there. All being well, recording for the next album will begin in April 2019.

Written as a reaction to the terrible events at the Bataclan, ‘Prepare To Rock’ is full of positive fire and fury.
Soaring vocals delivering heart felt lyrics over a full on drum assault, accompanied with powerful and melodic riffs.

‘Dead Man Walking’ , has a slick swagger, moving at a slightly different pace it manages to deliver rhythm and a superb guitar solo.
Starting off suspiciously like a power ballad, ‘Watching You’ quickly turns into quite a dark and moody mid paced rocker.
Have to mention that the vocal delivery here is just superb from the high pitched screams to the very deep and moody almost spoken parts.

So technically this new EP ends the way it started with ‘Taking Over’ delivering another full on metal assault.
Yet again it is both vocal performance and lyrical content that carries through, I am loving the line “This world has gone insane and we know who to blame”.

Sometimes it is hard to find anything good to say, this is an example where it is hard to find anything bad to say.
It simply delivers high quality British Heavy Metal, yes it nods back to the glory days of NWOBHM, But this is totally “Now!”

Of course the next best thing to any decent studio recorded heavy metal album or single is a live disc.
So twenty minutes of The Deep live is just the ticket, if you want to know if what they create in the studio is all about production and multi tracking then these live recordings are a perfect reminder that those vocals are all Mr Coldham and the band really are that good!

So yes it has been awhile since the review was posted, but there are very few bands in the world that can being me out of health forced retirement and one of the most important to me is Weapon!

So let’s have a quick catch up and go back to 2014. They of course released the stunning album 'Rising from the Ashes’ this was followed by a brief UK tour. Towards the end of the year their drummer Ian Sweeting left and was replaced by Darren Lee (Ex Midnight Messiah).

The following year was another packed diary of live dates in the UK and an appearance at the Matarock festival in Barcelona, then another European tour taking in Holland, Germany and Belgium.

After the tour bassist PJ Phillips decided to leave the band.

In 2016 Angelwitch/Tytan bassist Kevin Riddles steps in to help the band out whilst they continued to search for a permanent replacement.

In August saw the re-release/repackaged '35 Anniversary Edition' of the 'Set The Stage Alight' album on Blood & Iron Records, which contains all the bands material from 1980/1 plus two live tracks from their appearance at The Headbangers-Open-Air Ball, Germany in 2005.

So at the beginning of this year a new bassist joined in the shape of the very talented Tony Forsythe, a name I knew well as he had worked with Gerry Laffy from Girl and had also played in a band with Rudi ‘The Boss’ Riviere from Sapphire.

After rehearsals they set off for a series of Swedish dates and not long afterwards entered the recording studio, which brings us right up to date.

The Rocker.

Cover versions can at times be a dangerous choice. On the one hand you have to capture the essence of the original and show total respect and at the same time you have to add your own sound and vision.

This version of The Rocker fits both those criteria; firstly they have bridged the original album version of 5 minutes and the single version of just 2 ½ minutes and created a fresh and crisp production of 3 minutes of aural perfection.

Set The Stage Alight.

This could also be considered a dangerous choice. Bands can often make the mistake of re-recording one of their own classic tracks and then manage to ruin the song’s legacy.

I confess I was a little reticent at hitting play; my original treasured vinyl copy still sits in my collection to this day and is interconnected with my love and respect for the band.

Any doubts were blown away from the intro onwards, the power of the original was not only respected but frankly updated to remind us that maturity does not mean watering down or destroying a legacy but re-nailing to the wall for all to see and hear.

Superb drumming and bass work power through the speakers, the guitar sound is alive and furious, the vocals are even, well produced and as soaring as the day the song was first conceived.

I have said this before and it still remains the case, Weapon are not a band who bask in former glories of the NWOBHM era and attempt to replicate a youthful sound, they are a band who never stood still or looked backwards, this is a relevant now to today’s rock and metal music scene as it has always been.

Let me put it this way; The Rocker is 44 years old, Set The Stage Alight (like the band) is 37 years old. Yet this release has the punch of a fresh faced teen heavy metal band! "

Formed in 2005 in Birmingham by David Clark and Chris Webb; many incarnations followed in the search to complete the line-up, but with many songs written and ready to go, Dave and Chris began laying down songs at Arkham Studios in 2009 on a part time basis, with Alex Cooper producing. In summer 2013 after a long and arduous search, Matt Gore came into the picture, with a voice capable of doing the music justice. Since then the band have been recording their debut album.

'Feed The Flames' a solid classic rock song delivered in the style of a post 1981 NWOBHM band. Solid riffs, excellent vocals and a nice guitar solo.
This comes with a "But" and that is the drum programming, yes it carries the required rhythms needed to drive the song but there is no substitute for a real drummer when it comes to rock music, the tinny sound of the hi hat and the fake snare and bass drum hits just dont sit right.

Ingnoring the drum sound and 'Passive Resistence' is another great hard rock song, this one really has pace and some more excellent riffing.

Next track to really stand out is 'Libertarian', like a late night rock radio classic, this one has mood and maidenesque riffs in abundance a perfect guitar solo just gives me more to like and then that down feeling when that drum machine becomes so obvious.

The erst of the album is the same, brilliant vocals, guitar, some nice bass playing comes through the mix as well, nothing to fault or dislike here at all just that the drum sound doesnt fit the genre, that what stops this getting a 10/10 review, so get a drummer!

Formed by Ian Dick in Northampton in 1979, the band soon built up a strong following, after releasing a demo early in 1982 they were signed to Heavy Metal Records and release the single 'Sheralee, a year later after a live album the band split.

Returning in 2003 with a new Ep titled 'Infantrycide' followed by a compilation album 'Heavy Metal Force' in 2004 and a single 'Murderess Night'.A year later they released a new album 'Sins Of The warrior'.

We now jump to their 30th anniversary of the single 'Sheralee' and live appearences at the British Steel and Hard Rock Hell festivals, this lead to a determination to return to the scene and the band set about recording a new album.
The result was 2013's 'Dogs Of War', following year drummer Alex Smith was replaced by ex IQ man Tim Churchman and the band released a 2-cd compilation of mainly unreleased tracks from 1980 to 2007 and a bonus disc covering more recent recordings.

Opening with a seven minute epic called 'Conquistador' this sounds like a young progressive metal band creating clever layers and throwing in timing changes to make one helluva statement, add to this the experience of the musicians and what we have here is a stunning piece of music, full of melody, controlled agression and multi instrumental passages.

Next up is 'Leaving' a solid drum driven mid paced rocker, melodic vocals soar through the riffs, the next one 'Kill Or Cure' is more of the same, good quality hard driving music and some nice bass playing coming through my speakers as well.

Now 'Concrete Wilderness', a song i have played 3 times in a row, why? well first time i wasn't sure about it, second time i started to get used to its style and third time (now) whilst i'm writing this.So starts with a simple guitar riff then suddenly gets all "Judas Priest" riff wise, just as you start to get used to that, it slows down and gets all serious, then goes even slower with just a bit of guitar and a passionate vocal, then (keep up with me here) it bursts into life again all heavy and anthemic, nice guitar solo and crashing drums, speeds up again keeps a steady pace, then slows down again, then gets all epic towards the end.Right then by far the most intresting multi layered song so far and one of the best rock songs i have heard this year!

'Fight Or Fall' and 'Dead Mans Curve' are both solid rock songs, great riffs, great drums, pounding bass and excellent vocal delivery, nuff sed.

I wonder if 'Bullet Belt Blues' will be a blues song? No its not its another anthemic rocker and its not lyrically what i expected either, i thought it may be a homage to heavy metal fans, but instead its about the politics of war.

Love the phase effect on the drum intro to 'Six Hundred' which turns into another riff lead driving rocker, yes i know i've said that before in this review, but hey this music just drives along at such a great pace, its the best way i can describe it.

Please dont let 'A Light To See The Darkness' be a ballad, coz it sure as hell sounds like one so far, slow and moody guitar riff and nice vocals, but wait the tempo increases, there is life here (and some nice acoustic sounding guitar in the mix), so yes okay its a kinda ballad but there is enough structure here to avoid the cliche.

Finally wild riffs and frantic drumming introduces us to 'Dont Come Cring To Me Defiant', the vocal is at a different pace to the music, this works really well and it all comes together during the chorus, after which it goes crazy full speed on the drums again.

This is an album by a band who have clearly moved forward from the retro sounds of many a NWOBHM band, its a modern heavy rock album, well thought out, executed and produced.

Way back in the days of the NWOBHM there was a band called Deep Machine, by 1982 they were on the brink of splitting up after guitarist Kevin Heybourne (Ex Angelwitch) had just quit the band along with vocalist and drummer to reform AngelWitch.
This left guitarist John Wiggins and bassist Andy Wrighton the task of finding new members, which they did in the shape of ex-Minas Tirith vocalist Tony Coldham and ex-Burn guitarist Tony Harris, however just as the band were getting sorted out Wiggins was invited to join Paul Di’Anno’s new band Lonewolf.
Open auditions were then held and guitarist Paul Smith (ex-Janine) and drummer Steve Kingsley (ex-Omega) were brought into the fold. Within weeks the band had recorded a demo and was gigging. The 1982 line up of Deep Machine quickly developed a reputation for excellent song writing and musicianship and, most importantly, for dynamic and exciting live shows.
But as is the way of bands this line up soon went their seperate ways, Coldham, Harris and Smith went on to form Strutt, Wrighton joined John Wiggins in Tokyo Blade and Kingsley joined Rogue Male.

Now lets jump forward to 2012, some thirty years after they had last played together, the members of the 1982 line-up of Deep Machine got together again for a blast in a rehearsal studio. They were all amazed at how good it still sounded and four of the members decided to re-form the band with the exception of Wrighton who had commitments to Tokyo Blade.
At this point the band members were now unable to use the name Deep Machine because it was already taken, so they instead adopted the name The Deep. Sadly, Tony Harris was also forced to pull out of the project because of an ongoing physical illness which prevents him from being able to play guitar. However, Tony’s contribution to the band in terms of song writing has been immense and he remains, in many ways, the band’s ‘sixth member’.

Coldham, Kingsley and Smith auditioned bass players with the intention of working as a four piece, for a while another ex-AngelWitch band member Kevin Riddles joined the band. Eventually, Mick Feleppa, a guitarist Coldham knew from his days in Strutt was recruited together with comparative new-comer Don Whiberley on bass. Then, near the end of 2013, the band proceeded to record a self-financed, self-produced album, Premonition, at The Vatican recording studios in the east-end of London.

Talk about authentic NWOBHM and this would be the defination, the opening song 'The Rider' is pure old school, part Saxon and part Black Axe, but and its an important "but" this is all The Deep, solid guitar playing, polished vocals and up to date sound (think Amulet) but wearing its Colours proud for all to hear and see.

Slightly more restrained is 'You Take My Breath Away' a mid paced hard rock song with excellent backing vocals.

'Nightstalker' another great song with its perfect mix of old meets new, kinda waiting for this one to go in a different direction and it does not dissapoint about half way through it changes pace and gets heavier and a great solo as well.

Slower and near rock ballad 'Cold Hearted' follows, have to say its the passion in the vocal delivery that just saves this one for me.

'All I Want' is quite anthemic, good chorus, one destined for fist punching in the air and mass headbanging down the front row at the next gig i think!

I'm sure the band wouldn't agree, but to me 'Out Of Touch' has an american radio rock feel, tinges of Van Halen and Motley Crue lurk here, really good song especially blasting out of the radio on the motorway.

Title track 'Premonition' starts with some excellent fretwork from the guitarist and then explodes out of the speakers, a real solid rocker for 6 awesome minutes.

Oh yes, hell is this one good, 'Spellbound' a blues laden slab of classic british hard rock, driven along by the drums this one is an instant hit for me.

'Saga' whilst overall another great song, does tend to lean towards the rock ballad, and thats a style not for me, but excellent vocals and for once a non slash like guitar solo, mean that i can just about listen to it without having to click next on the player.

Final track is 'Turn Me Loose' nice guitar opening, followed by some great twin guitar action and looks like we are heading for another ballad type, but wait, oh yes, its suddenly kicks in, boy does this one leave you wanting more and what a guitar solo, absolutley screaming!

Welcome back guys, fucking awesome album!

Traditional heavy/doom metal band from the misty mountains of Vermont, there is little information on them, in fact i recieved none at all and their facebook page was no help either, still this is a limited edition cassette release of just 95 copies from the 'War On All Fronts' label.

Coming out with some pure NWOBHM sounding music on 'Witchfynder', solid riffs, pounding drums and some quality screaming vocals.

'Gaudete' is a mixture of neo pagan folk and NWOBHM doom, beautiful vocals really make this one something a bit special.

At 11 minutes 'Merlins Lament' starts with a slow and simple guitar strum, soon turning into another occult/folk song, the heavy side of things is more up to date, a crushing but melodic heavy metal workout that towards the end borderlines some proto thrash.

Finally a symphonic beginning greets 'Raise Your Chalice', this one is reminiscent of early 70's guitar lead rock blending the power of say Blackmore and the dual guitar sounds of early wishbone ash, then somehow ends up like Judas Priest.

Totally brilliant little EP, sure they are looking back for their influences but have produced a solid modern heavy metal record (err sorry tape).
One to look out for this year.

German band formed in 1997 by Jan Tappert and Carsten Stiens, after a few line up changes they settled on a four piece and drew influence from NWOBHM and classic hard rock bands.

After numerous demos they released their debut album 'Hellstory' in 2008 and later made an appearence in the movie 'Fate & Destruction', work on this new album began in december 2012.

'Monolith' kicks us off and takes us back to the glory days of early 80's metal, this one has a touch of Armoured Saint about it (remember 'Can U Deliver'??)mixed in with some Tygers Of Pan Tang.

Some faster riffs and drums for 'Demon' and a very obvious NWOBHM influence, they do manage to keep it the correct side of proto thrash/speed metal and create a good solid song.

Quite a moody start to 'Sanctuary Of 83', a spoken intro which works well and you are left waiting for the song to explode through the speakers, which it does for quite a Dio sounding song.

'Horsemen Of The Grail' has another awesome little riff running throughout, good strong vocal and some nice timing changes to drive this one along, but where was the blistering guitar solo that this one cried out for?

Acoustic guitar intro, then slow bluesy electric guitar, this one 'The Dusk' is looking dangerously like a "Ballad", lets hope not, but oh fuck slow and melodic then a heart wrenching vocal, yep this was a ballad, why oh why do bands insist on putting this kinda crap on their albums?

Do i detect some good old 12 bar chords? I was expecting 'Under The Pentagram' to have a Witchfinder General vibe, but this one is more like Saxon.

'Fallen Rainbow Warrior' is another one that is early 80's NWOBHM influence, and funnily enough another one i could have imagined Saxon doing.

After more of the same with 'Bells Of Fate' we get 'Through Different Eyes' which sounds like a 45 second intro dragged out to a four minute instrumental that goes nowhere and does nothing, a pointless waste of 4 minutes.

Fortunately 'Running High' gets back on track, this one reminds me of an old song, though cant remember which one, but whatever it is, this is another good track.

Ending with 'Blade Of Black' soild powerchords, mid tempo drum beats and a powerful vocal delivery, we end on a good one that even has some shout it out loud style backing vocals.

Weapon, one of the greatest NWOBHM bands of all time formed in March 1980.

They released one single in 1980, Its A Mad Mad World/Set The Stage Alight' it sold out within weeks promting a second pressing and a 12" version.

A major tour with Motorhead pushed them to the forefront of the NWOBHM scene,so they recorded an album for Virgin which was shelved until 2003, when many of the songs were issued by the ZoomClub label for a compilation cd.

Lets not forget the Legend that tells of a soundboard live recording from that Motorhead "Ace Up Your Sleeve" tour that was labeled 'No Sleep Till Hammersmith' by the sound engineer, and now you know where the name came from.

For a new generation of heavy metal fans it is to arch NWOBHM plaguerists Metallica that their name remained known as they "borrowed" much of the single's B Side for their song 'Hit The Lights', yet the band never quite made it to the next level. After a line up change and more gigs the band felt it was time to move on.

Success was found with Wildfire, Statetrooper and Paddy Goes To Holyhead for some members whilst drummer Bruce found a degree of major fame as part of NWOBHM supergroups with Paul DiAnno and other ex members of bands like Praying mantis, before joining with the reformed glam legends The Sweet.

In 2005 the band reformed to play a one off Anniversary show, such was the response that the idea to reform permanently become a real option, settling on a new line up they recorded a new track 'Ready 4 U'in 2011 and returned to the live scene.

In 2012 the band added the 'UK' to their name and registered the band as a trademark for legal reasons (but it still just WEAPON to me).

Last year the band announced that they were recording a full album and that the original line up would also record a new song.

Well its here, so with a large vodka in hand its time to hit play and set the cd player alight!

we start with a synth based intro with 'Prelude - The Awakening' which carrys on into
'Ride The Mariah!' which is not a song about sexual fantasies with Miss Carey, but a raw and heavy rocker with a solid drum beat driving the sound.

This one 'Fountain Of Paradise' reminds me of classic Motley Crue (Dr Feelgod era), its got that sleazy LA guitar rock sound, definately one for the american audience, semi-anthemic with a rich production.

'Warrior' has some nice basswork in the mix, one of those stop start type of songs, great backing vocals match the perfect lead vocal delivery, add to this a stunning riff heavy solo and you have a truly outstanding song.


This is an updated version of the download song released back in 2011, 'Ready 4 U' still has that "classic rock" feel, the backing vocal helps create a very melodic rock song, one might say 'Commercial' or perhaps 'Radio Friendly' rock in the vein of say Bon Jovi or old school Brian Adams.If this was re released as a single i would think it would gain major airplay.

An ambient/sound fx/sample greets the beginning of 'Burning Skies' and actually reminds me of Ministry's NWO Redux (but slower), this is a dark song talking of the "hand of satan", the riff reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Over The Mountain' whilst the vocal style Danny has is reminiscent of Devin Townsend.
The use of samples is very well done and works well with the solid riff and driving drumming.

Look i'm sorry but 'Alamein' reminds me of the Scorpions 'Wind Of Change' and i hate that bloody song, so okay lets be objective, this is one of those acoustic rock ballad things with awesome production values, lead guitar work over acoustic guitar, harmonic vocal, nice backing vocals and it has that 'emotion' put into the vocal, but argghh no sorry not for me.

Now 'Wonderland' has that kick-ass sound, but do i detect a hint of post black album metallica in here? could be something of load/reload, though to be fair the harmony is more melodic, definately an american sound lurking here, you know like Dim Leppard perfected ! (yes i did spell that right!).

Kind of back in that early Bon Jovi anthemic, shout it out loud sound with 'Blood Soaked Rock', soon to be blasting out of car radios on the highways of america.

'Bad Reputation' is not a cover of Joan Jetts classic nor Thin Lizzys late 70's song, this is another sleazy sounding rocker, again the backing vocals give the song a sing a long feel.
Dark and dirty riffs mix with some great basswork and that solid drumbeat keeps the whole thing moving.

The final track is 'Celebration Time' and it's another well produced, radio friendly rocker, solid harmonies and some guitarwork reminiscent of Graham Oliver on Saxon's classic '747'.

So 34 years since the original line up were last in the studio together and the new song is 'Killer Instinct'.
Added as a bonus track i wondered if it would be old school NWOBHM but actually it reminds me of The Sweet in their heavier moments, perhaps not surprising with Bruce on drums, mind you it could have been weirder if it had sounded like Inner City Unit (Baz's pre Weapon band with Nik from Hawkiwnd).

Okay so what this is not is a NWOBHM sounding album by a band trying to re-create the old days, this is a solid, mature album by a band who have grown up and taken in rock music and all it's influences, what they have created is a brilliant 'Classic Rock' album.

The Wakefield band formed in august 2004 have so far notched up 4 demos, 2 ep's and one album 'Rites Of Passage' which got a 9 out of 10 from me in september 2011 (though not actually released till feb 2012).

The new album is the bands most experimental release to date as well as their most diverse. "We are extremely proud of what we have acheived with the new album." comments guitarist Steve Blower. "There was a great feeling going in to the studio. We'd learnt a lot from 'Rites Of Passage' and we believe we've improved on every aspect of recording and had room to experiment a lot more."
Much thought and work has gone into the cd's packaging as well and will be released as a special 6 panel digipak featuring a large amount of artwork painted by James Mullet throughout the packaging.

The album opens with the instrumental 'IX Circles' with some nice keyboard and synth mixed in, this then leads straight into 'The Life Of Death' taking its inspiration from Clive Barkers short story from vol 6 of books of blood, telling the story of strange things in a church crypt.
This one has a great NWOBHM feel, sounding like one of those classic albums from 1980, a strong vocal performance as well as some maidenesque guitar work outs.

'Inferno' has a real "proto-doom' feel with a 'heaven & hell' styled bass line, sweeping doom laden chords and another superb vocal and a shout it out loud backing vocal.

Picking up the pace with some mid paced thrash, 'Edge Of Madness', about half way through the speed picks up for that "Mosh Pit" frenzy moment and ending with a riff heavy solo.

Echoes of early thrashers Virus throughout 'The Extremist' an almost crust-punk vocal gives this an interesting edge.

Now the next track 'Mortuary' has a really familiar riff in it's intro, kind of like Armoured Saints 'Can U Deliver', whatever lonely brain cell of memory it has nudged, the song is really catchy with a great chorus, the same with 'The Stranger' great, catchy, excellent guitar work and another half remembered riff from the past!

Full on Thrash assault with 'Descent Of Angels', punchy as hell with an agressive snarl from the vocalist.

And now an 11 minute epic...... 'The Night Of Samhain', starts with acoustic guitar, wind f/x and bells, when the band kicks in the sound returns to that early doom but with some great keyboards giving a darkened ambience.
The vocalist seemingly pushed to his limits pulls off a near perfect performance, though one thing its pronounced "souwain" not "Sam Hain".
Thrown in solid drumming, bass and guitar riffs in perfect harmony and this one lives up to the term "Epic".

Finally some nice orchestration on 'Still The Wall Remains', a semi-acoustic ballad, the backing vocals just seem slightly out of sync in places but all in all a great way to end a very diverse and well put together album.

This is a huge leap forward from their previous album, musically more advanced, definately more experimental, improved vocals and better production, this one is a must have for your collection.

Formed by Ian Dick in Northampton in 1979, the band soon built up a strong following, after releasing a demo early in 1982 they were signed to Heavy Metal Records and release the single 'Sheralee, a year later after a live album the abnd split.

Returning in 2003 with a new Ep titled 'Infantrycide' followed by a compilation album 'Heavy Metal Force' in 2004 and a single 'Murderess Night'.
Seemed the band were back in buisness and a new album 'Sins Of The warrior' was released in 2005 which featured the epic song 'Starhaven' amongsest others.

We then move forward to their 30th anniversary of the single 'Sheralee' and live appearences at the British Steel and Hard Rock Hell festivals, this lead to a more stable line up and a determination to return to the scene and the band set about recording a new album.

So after 34 years, numerous line up changes and releases the band now present their new album on their own label, and its time to crank the volume and hit "play".

Opening track 'Dogs Of War' pretty much blasts right through! its a fairly typical post NWOBHM sound, fortunatley its does not go down that "Thrash" route that some make the mistake of, in fact this is quite a mature sound with some great guitar work and a stong clear vocal.

There are some echos of proto-doom lurking in 'I Can’t Breathe' a bit like Quartz jamming with Diamond Head.

Now this one definatley has a Doom element to it, in fact i swear i detect some Iommi riffage in 'The Eye'.

'Fireflies' returns to a more upbeat tempo, some nice backing vocals on this one making a definate sing a long at gigs.

Wow 'Lock N’ Load' really rocks! a great track, pure old school NWOBHM, and absolute 100% headbanging masterpiece, solid vocal, awesome twin guitar attack, solid drums and punching bass.

The pace slows for 'Bedlam', a near blues structure reminicent of early Mamas Boys, about half way through the song moves up a gear for some high vocals then end with some clever timing changes leading to a great solo, simply put another great track.

Frantic drumming and guitar greets 'The Demon In The Room' then turning to a mid tempo rhythm punctuated with that occasional frantic break.

'I Am' and 'Forever' both have a Maidenesque quality but with much better vocals.

'Take Me Home' and 'No Mans Land' have a very modern british metal feel, solid and full of power.

The first of three bonus tracks included on the cd is a new version of 'Sheralee', weird hearing it with a different vocalist, still sounds good though.

'Crash Course' is not what i thought it would be (a cover of the Budgie song that was fucked up by Shitallika) but a storming little instrumental with some excellent riffing.

Finally 'The Hanging Tree', its an acoustic ballad its okay but seems to be a touch pointless and doesnt really match the tone or quality of the rest of the album.

All in all a solid british rock album....so go grab a copy!

Formed in 1980 in Jersey, the NWOBHM band went on to release 2 albums and an ep, always recieved great reviews, even managed to support Thin Lizzy, but never made it to the mainland uk, had they done so this band would have been huge, they split in 1983.

But the legacy of the NWOBHM is one that always attracts intrest from music fans, this lead the band to release a best of cd called 'Retroshock' in 1998.
In 2002 a better compilation CD was issued called 'Anthology' which collected all the bands precious releases and a demo tape.
In 2003 the Haworth brothers used the bands name and released 'Still Screaming'.

Then it all went quiet until last year when a limited edition vinyl of the bands debiut album was released and the band reformed in February.
Such was their enthusiasm that they decided to make this more than just a one-off and began writing and planning more gig's including finally heading to England.

On April 13th they released the album 'The Dark Place' (recorded at 70's legend Gilbert O'Sullivans Studio) to co-inside with a storming live appearence at the Keep It True festival in Germany where they played along side AngelWitch, Quartz, Holocaust and a host of other bands.

Some crunching powerchords open 'The Dark Place' this quickly gives way to a melodic vocal with suitable backing, the song soon kicks back in with some serious heavy riffing.

'Red' starts with some acoustic guitar and moves along at a nice pace, get the feeling that this one is gonna build up to something and yes at 2 minutes it blasts my speakers!
Amazing that the music can be so heavy (yet refined) and the vocals can stay so melodic yet work so well without that need to scream.
The song then breaks down into some "prog" with a childs voice speaking, gives it a creepy feel, then end on some more epic guitarwork.

I spoke to bassist Gary and he told me that this song 'Too Late The Hero' was quite possibley the very first song the band ever wrote some 33 years ago, this one never made it to their first album due to time constraints.
Funnily enough it has that old school feel, crazy because songs like this back then would have put the firmly in the Diamond Head/Limelight vein and would have been a classic.

'Halls Of The Dead' is a dark and atmospheric song, almost in early doom genre, very melodic with a simple but haunting riff running throughout, and some nice vocals again.

Track 5 is 'The Watcher' has all the elements of a neo-prog rocker, the quality of the musicianship and the way in which the song is put together makes for great listening, allowing what seems to be complex timing changes to blend with agression and melody.

'Monster' has another creepy start, when the vocals start with "Do you want to come out and play?" the answer is a definate no thanks! man this one is dark, guessing the monster of the song is not of horror movies but of reality, and that makes this nasty and uncomfortable.
Heavy as hell to boot! vocals remind me of Peter Gabriel circa 1980 when he was doing songs like 'The Intruder', wonderful guitar solo thrown in, one to crank the volume to 100 (well i did!).

'Paragon' carrys on the same vibe with that gritty dark and heavy sound, whilst the next song 'Burn With Your Demons' after its quiet intro turns into an anthemic fist in the air rocker, really powered along by the guitar and pounding basswork.

'Q&A' is a new version of the song that had been on their original demo, mainly according to Gary "because of the poor production" on the demo.
All i have to say on this track is that if Marillion were more metal in 1982 then this is what they would sound like.

All hail the cd and its ability to allow more music on it because the next song 'Taste Of Life' now gets the full treatment that they were unable to achieve when they first recorded this way back on their debut album.
The extended almost "ethereal" intro works well leading into a riff fest!

Finally 'Play Your Game' shows the mature metallers thumping out another quality mid paced rocker, full of the melody and riffery that has come to define this band.

You cant help but think when listening to this, that here is a band who have produced a world class album despite a thirty year break, wonder dear listener and imagine how big would this band have been had theykept going, would they be on album number 15 and planning their 25th world tour? i think they would!

An instant classic from a band who understand their craft and how to perfect the art of Heavy Metal without resorting to rehash old sounds and throw in a bit of thrash to make it up.

Witchtower began in 2012 concieved as a solo project from Víctor de la Chica, a rock musician from Spain with a love of the NWOBHM.

As with early works from Casey Chaos and Dave Grohl he wrote and plays all instruments himself.
However Witchtower is a fully functioning live band (as listed above).

'Dont Turn Off The Lights' certainly has that old school feel, some solid guitar work going on here, the various breakdowns reminicent of both Maiden and Diamond Head.
In fact if it wasnt for the accent in the vocals this could easily be london 1981.

'One Way' is a slower song, this one immediatley reminds me of Tygers Of Pan Tang, its got incredible production, i swear the snare drum is actually in my head.A solid track.

Picking up the pace again with 'Stronger Than You', again Victor is not afraid to wear his influences loud and proud, this has all the hallmarks of classic White Label era Diamond Head.A really strong vocal on this one punches through the rich production, then throw in a killer guitar solo, awesome stuff!!

The intro for 'Return To The Witches Castle' is a little horror movie pastiche which i was expecting to break into some angelwitch or witchfinder general, but no, this one has a barracuda styled riff running through it with that maidenesque guitar style, but then OH YES! some early doom creeps in with wind sound fx and what sounds like an organ to create some moody sounds, then kicks right back into metal.
A nice track but no vocals, cant help but feel that some demonic vocals would turn this one into a major piece of work.

All in all excellent stuff, it has not fallen into nwobhm styled thrash, which many bands have a bad habbit of doing, this is an authentic and well executed tribute.

Cauldron the Canadian heavy metal band formed in 2006 in Toronto, take their influence from the NWOBHM scene of the early 1980's.
They were formed following the breakup of Goat Horn, with guitarist Brandon Wars leaving to form a new band, Zuku. Cauldron consists of Jason Decay on vocals and bass and Ian Chains on guitar.
Since forming, Cauldron has toured both North America and Europe, including a performance at the Keep It True Festival in Germany. In early 2007, they released a four-song EP, Into The Cauldron. It was composed of material originally intended for the next Goat Horn album.
Cauldron's song "Restless" is featured in a DC Shoes video of professional skateboarder Danny Way.
Drummer Al Chambers left the band in 2008 to join Relapse Records' Toxic Holocaust, and the position was filled briefly by Steelrider, the original drummer of Goat Horn. He was then replaced by Kill Cheerleader/Zuku/Crystal Castles drummer, Chris Rites. After Rites' departure from the band in 2009, Chris Steve of Canadian band Aggressor took over the role of drummer until December 2011. Chris Rites temporarily returned for the recording of Tomorrow's Lost.
In July 2012 Cauldron announced Myles Deck as their new drummer.

Tomorrow’s Lost was recorded in Spring 2012 with producer Jameson Elliott. Despite stating that it’s not a concept album as such, Cauldron guitarist Ian Chains explains: “As an album title it refers to varying degrees of hopelessness that we can somehow relate to.  It means striving hard to achieve something that may never see the light of day, or making poor decisions that come back to ruin everything for you.” Despite the bleak sounding influences, the nine album tracks pulsate with classic heavy metal licks and urge you to fist-pump with NWOBHM-inspired vocals.

Cauldron are a band who remain true to their heavy metal roots, and yet have the unique ability to span genres, continents and cliques with their irrepressible enthusiasm and style. Counting the likes of Alice Glass (Crystal Castles) and Lady Gaga’s best friend and DJ Lady Starlight among their high profile fans, Cauldron have a universal charm that has seen their legions of fans swell with every tour and record.

Cauldron’s anthemic songs really come to life on Tomorrow’s Lost; dripping with attitude and soaked in melody. Deliberately shunning modern production values, and transcending scenes and fads, Cauldron take you on a gloriously retro ride through the annals of heavy metal, inviting you to join them in believing that true heavy metal is more than a passing movement; it is a way of life.

Easily their best album to date, this tribute to NWOBHM is well executed, oh wait its not a tribute??? Damn i could have sworn that this was for Angelwitch and Witchfynde fans!

So if you want an authentic taste of what used to rock the UK in the good old days then this is a pretty good one to add to the collection.

When it comes to new bands attempting the NWOBHM style they usually just play a watered
down vesrion of thrash metal, so when a group of talented musicians with thrash backgrounds form a band playing that genre create genuine authentic NWOBHM circa 1979 you HAVE to take notice.

Those responsible and clever enough to understand this music are Marek who used to be in
'Invasion' and currently runs the Live Evil Festival.
Jamie former bassist with 'Doctor Death' and Will a talented artist and tattooist who also did the bands artwork.
Drummer Dave has an impressive CV that includes 'Doreterna' and Thrash legends 'Virus'.

So the group of friends decided to form a band based on their love of NWOBHM, Doom and
Heavy Metal some time last year then recorded this ep with Jamie at the helm and mastering from another Jamie (Gomez Arellano) who was responsible for recording 'Ghost's' debut album.

The final element to this release is that its only available on "TAPE"!! and just 100 copies.

Stunning opener 'Running Out Of Time' has that classic early doom feel as if Wytchfynde
were jamming with Quartz, superb bass work, high pitched vocals, powerchords and a nice guitar sound all held together with a solid drum beat.

'Black Magic Attack' has a driving and very powerfull beat reminicent of early 'Diamond Head', there is a very well executed proto-thrash guitar break that is still the right side of 'Raven'.

Somebody really should have shouted "wakey wakey" at the beginning of 'The Hangman', its
got those great little powerchords running through it and another kick ass guitar solo.
The song is very catchy with its "he is the hangman" chorus.

Finally (and all too soon) we come to 'Sign Of The High Priest', this one has 'Diamond Head' written all over it, this one moves at a fast pace, great lyrics and pure NWOBHM at its most professional. The break down is brilliant with a top heavy bass line and crashing drums.

Fuck sake its like Amy has inticed me into the TARDIS and taken me back to the marquee in
1979 and handed me a demo tape!

Nothing but respect for this release, a band with real understanding of the genre, hopefully an album and some gigs to follow.

Hugely influential UK outfit now celebrating a full 30 years since the release of their
‘Welcome To Hell’ debut, will have a brand new studio album released on November 28th
via Spinefarm Records/Universal.

Lets face it they accidentelly invented a new genre and approach to heavy metal with that
debut album, though it was slated at the time and the band faced accusations that they
couldnt play, they proved themselves big time! I remember taking my prized white label copy to neal kay to play a track, he did then told me never to bring that disc again!

With their second album 'Black Metal' they gave name and rise to what would become the
most exciting and controversial sub-genre of rock music ever.

Titled ‘Fallen Angels’ and featuring 13 fresh recordings produced by main-man / bassist
Cronos, this is the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Hell’ release, and sees the trio adopting a style highly redolent of classic early Venom and creating a true 3rd album (At war With Satan was a great album, but had a smooth production and an ambitios side one) with modern studio technology employed only to increase the general level of nastiness.

Says Cronos: “When we make an album, it usually takes a few tracks to get into the vibe,
although this album’s vibe was very much present during the ideas stage… everything came
together so naturally. “We all started throwing ideas together on the South American tour, and then again during
the live shows of 2010, and so we knew from the start that we had some amazing new songs
to make a great album.“With any new album, you look for a few songs to put into the live set, although that is
going to be very difficult with this record, as we can nail the entire album live if we
want! “‘Fallen Angels’ is the result of a band that has spent nearly two years touring and
growing as a unit, and as the band grows tighter, so the songs get better and heavier,
and we instinctively know what each other is thinking, and the ideas flow easier. “This album is only the very start for this line-up; there will be many more albums and
live shows to come for Venom. It has taken a long time and a lot of changes to finally
deliver a Venom that can attack Black Metal the way it should be – fast, furious, tight
and terrifying. All Hell Breaks Loose… Hell Fucking Yeah !!!!!!!!!”

All in all a brilliant album, chaotic at times but raw and alive, oh and track 9 is not an Exploited cover as i thought it might be.
