Best known for their divisive debut, 2018's "THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED", the band have decided to continue their assault on black metal as a scene and genre this time by merging black metal with many genres of "non-kvlt" music.

Frontman Richard explains: "With THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED we used genre trappings to assault black metal with its own aural aesthetics. Raw guitars, sloppy riffs, gurgled vocals, and the bass turned way down. This time around we wanted to 'pervert' this 'sacred' music by pairing it alongside genres that most 'true' fans hate."

CROWN OF JOY (A SUBLIME SUN THRIVING AMONGST DYING STARS) has all the anger and ferocity of previous albums THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED and WINGS OF THE JOYFUL but merges that fury with genres like trap, RnB, jazz, j-pop, hip-hop, and hyper pop to create a unique experience that old school black metal fans will absolutely abhor.

 Well 'Lay Down' may start in a traditional distorted, funeral doom style but something a little different is thrown in.

'Ghost Me' has some sweet harmony vocals intercut with some technical Death Metal whilst 'Dread' is a pretty straight forward Blackened Death Metal assault.

Some symphonic styled Black Metal with 'Grey Rainbow' is well executed and followed by some rappy stuff backed with nice piano playing.

'Obfuscation of Intent' just sounds like Dethklok!', Nailed Deity' mixes some beautiful piano with basic Metal.

Outstanding track 'Again & Again' is a fantastic brutal Death Metal attack which evolves into some great techno, this is followed by another great track 'None / Nothing', slow piano and narration into mid paced Death Metal, the mix really works well creating the perfect balance.

'Judgement and Justice' is weird, sort of hip-hop rappy thing, vocal works well but somehow sounds slightly comical.

Metal meets Pop with 'Slitting Their Throats', again suffers from bad mixing, nothing wrong with the metal meets pop idea, but just sounds like two separate songs randomly cut together.

'Kvlt After School Xbox Kommando' is so far the only track that sounds like Black Metal from ye olde tymes, I'm guessing the lyrics are not serious.

Finally we end on 'Sublime Sunshine' another mainstream melodic Death metal tune.

Mr. Weeks is clearly a talented musician, but the subversion of Black Metal is not apparent, there was a chance to be as innovative and controversial as Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were to mainstream metal back in the day, it just hasn't worked.

I will have to wait for someone to come up with a Black (metal) Eyed Peas.

Finlands 'Rocking Corpses' were born at the end of 2007 out of Tony's passion for all things horror, death metal, blues, injected with some very dark humour. Some months later Laze got also excited about the idea and joined the project on vocals. Eventually, in 2009 two demo songs were recorded and finally in 2011 the first full album "Rock 'n' Rott" was finished and released a year later.  

By 2017 Mike and Pete had their own project called Grit going on and needed a guitarist and a vocalist. Tony and Laze joined and very soon realized that the feel of Grit was very similar with Rocking Corpses and the band were "re-animated".

Collaboration of writing new songs was only held back by constant 'Spinal Tap-esque' problems with drummers, finally the issue was resolved and the band was complete.

Once we get passed the intro the rockin fun starts, great riffs epic death metal vocals which are shared with a Danzig style clean vocal, awesome mix of Death and Rock 'N' Roll.

The blues influence is present with 'Buried', one of those great riffs that just bounce along.

After another full on on rocker, comes 'Rocking Corpses II', very much in the Danzig area again, solid riffs, fun lyrics and a killer guitar solo.

'Drinking With The Dead' an acoustic C&W tune! Followed by another? well sort of because the Ghost of Johnny Cash is very much coming through my speakers and then the song explodes to some seriously heavy riffing!

We end with some full on Thrash/Speed Metal and 'War For Doom' completes a very enjoyable album with clever mix of styles and vocal work.

A one-man band hailing from France, created by Phobos, a talented musician & songwriter who is/has been involved in various underground bands.
This is a limited edition Cd & Cassette crammed full of old school death metal.
The lyrics are influenced by Clive Barker & Edgar Allan Poe.

To be honest I usually avoid these one band death/black metal releases as they tend to be a shadow of what a full band can achieve, that said as far as I am concerned the magic words here were Clive Barker, so time, as they say, to hit play and turn up the volume.

We kick off with a brief sample from a movie and then launch into manic riffs, pounding drumming and death growls and from this point onwards it pretty much keeps up this break neck pace.
A relentless onslaught of power, each song bringing with it another sledgehammer blow to the skull.
However the lead guitar breaks seem slightly out of place, like Kerry King on a bad day they just don't quite fit, everything else is perfectly balanced and well produced.
As for the lyrical influence, such is the level of aggression they could be anything,no degree of clarity (or lyric sheet) available to find out if Poe & Barker are present.

Aside from my personal view, if you want just over half an hour of well executed death metal that does not compromise, then this is for you.

Canadian death metal solo-project started in 2009 by guitarist Luka Milojica.
First emerged in 2010 with the demo 'Plagueswept', then returned in 2012 with the full length debut release ‘Spellbook’.
Described as “a blackened tome of blasting distortion” 2015’s ‘Demononicon’ was unleashed.
During this time he has performed one man shows and had a number of tracks on compilation cover mount CD’s Antichrist Magazine (2013), Zero Tolerance (2013) and Slowly We Rot (2014). He also gained a lot of positive press coverage from fanzines and online pages.
Now he has returned with ‘Exomancer’ and once again is unleashing his take on Blackened Death Metal, drawing on his many influences to create some original music.

Blasting off with ‘Death Portent’ we are thrown into a bleak and technically proficient world of complex drum programming and stunning guitar playing, vocals are minimal and full of menace and the production is perfect.

It has to be said that ‘Unsummon’ is more of the same, with the exception of a slightly doomy introduction and onwards it goes.

Now ‘Blood Ripple’ offers a little more in the way of vocal delivery and the overall feel is that of early Thrash/Speed metal that we all used to love before it sold it’s soul to the commercial markets.

We end on ‘Crypternity’ whilst remaining in the same vein in has timing changes and a slight off rhythm which gives the song some real added interest.

At just over 30 minutes this sticks to the music, no intro’s and outro’s, no filler, just the music delivered right to your ears.

For me this is at times reminiscent of early Morbid Angel or Dimmu Borgir, it certainly has the potential to reach a wide variety of fans of numerous heavy metal sub genres.

Formed in August 2005, the band started performing in various gigs of the active metal circuit of their hometown Guwahati.
However, after a few years of being active in the circuit, some of the band members left the band due to various individual engagements, from 2009 onwards. Thereafter, founder member and guitarist Samudragupta Dutta and long term bassist Himangshu Borah reformed the band again in the year 2011 with guitarist and long term friend of both, Imtiyaz Alam.

'The Art Of War' is one helluva agressive opener, very chaotic vocals and screams over superb technical drum patterns, the second part of the song does manage to calm down for some clean vocals, however the next song 'Fireborn' is just a relentless onslaught of drum driven power from beginning to end!

It's not until we come to 'Afterthought' that we are allowed to relax and are treated to some more refined guitar playing, laid back drum rhythms and some melodic and gentle vocals.

But 'Once Below A Time' decides to kick us back into life with another assault on the ears and blows away any notion of "Melody" with this drum driven monster full of hate and agression.

'The Waste Land' starts with melodic guitar intro and then the drums come in, but this epic final song brings together a perfect blend of extreme power and melody, some stunning vocals and great guitar work all against this powerhouse backdrop.

A review of the first epic, 'Riphyon- The Tree of Assiyah Putrescent' will stand as the same for all four songs.
Huge, epic well produced slabs of symphonic blackend metal, a mixture of influences throughout the music and death metal undertones.

With so many vocalists (all of whom seem to sound the same to me) i'm not quite sure why they needed so many?

Chugun (meaning cast iron in Russian) was formed in Tel Aviv, Israel in 2010.
By the end of 2013 they had recorded and released three demo tracks and began preforming.
After only four shows they were one of five bands selected to participate in the 'Wacken Metal Battle' Israeli Finals.
The band's musical style combines the speed and savage aggression of old school Thrash and Death Metal along with the rhythmic elements of modern metal, to create fast, aggressive and intense music.
Recently, they completed recording their debut album "Virus".

Highly technical and quite brutal Death Metal, delieverd at high speed with a few added Thrash Elements mainly with the powerchord and rhythms.
Now add to this a screaming female vocal that would give Arch Enemy a fright and you have a solid and well executed album.

old school death metal with punk attitude from Bologna.
Gravesite is a death metal band born from the ashes of Undead Creep in 2014. Members of Haemophagus, Cancer Spreading and Bland Vargar (among others) play in this project. First 3-track demo called "Obsessed By The Macabre" has been recorded during was days in May 2014 and released on tape by Iconoclast Records in September 2014.

Wel i dont get the punk attitude bit that was in their biography, this is straight forward old style death metal with hints of early black metal.
A little more structure and rhythm in some of the songs than you ususally get and the last one 'Suscipe Mortem' with its hints of Doom is by far my fave here.

From Argentinia, formed in 2009. A black/thrash band featuring ex Insultor drummer Warpig.

See i dont like intros, but 'Haunting' is a nice atmospheric guitar piece, just should have been at the beginning of the song 'Perversecution' as opposed to a seperate track.
But anyway on to the first proper track and its good old school thrash/speed complete with an epic riff frenzy at the end, the "Black' element seems to be the gruff vocals.

'Conspiracy Vs the World' could be Venom, has that same raw punk energy and speed, as do the next few tracks as well until we hit the 'Interlude'. Really? Two and a half minutes of some sampled speech or movie dialogue.

At least we return to the straight forward stuff after that until the stupid 'Outro'.
The last two demos are so muffled and raw you can barley make them out.

Gloom was formed in 2002 in Madrid, when several friends who had played in different local bands decided to join together to set up a death metal band,with the only intention of having fun playing the music they most liked.
After about five years playing in some nightclubs in the area, to get a demo and multiple changes in the formation, the band broke up for a little over a year, until the three remaining members of the original (Bruto, Maiki and Fer) met Ayuso, drummer of Unsouled, and decided to resurrect the group.
In 2008 they begin to rehearse and look for a bassit, until James Surt, bassist of Wolfencross and Omission, joins the band, with whom they self released their first CD “Mater Tenebrarum” in 2010, which had very good reviews.
Eventually J. Surt and Bruto left the band for various reasons and were replaced by Manu on bass, and R.Necroseheiim, singer of The Art of Blasphemy and ex-Cryfemal on vocals and keyboards.

Well its typical death metal, it may have keyboards but i cant tell them apart from any other instrument.
This is full on brutal in your face stuff, screaming vocals, powerful bass lines, held together by super fast drumming. Add to this a major riff fest and you have ten slabs of the heavy stuff.

Forged in Hell's Basement - Medicine Hat, Canada,back in 2008.
Barrows, was formed as an outlet for three musicians with a passion for all things heavy and disturbing. With an original line-up of Lee Newton (vocals), Owen Matz (guitars) and Allan Breitkreuz (drums); one demo had been released.

But, due to unfortunate circumstances, Allan had to resign from the band.  With no drummer, Joey Stannard was asked to take over drumming duties. At this point the reboot button was pressed and Barrows' signature sound of Immolation clashing it out with Cattle Decapitation and Circle of Dead Children came to life. Swine Grind.

In October of 2014, armed with an arsenal of songs, Barrows entered into the recording process and this is the result.

Whilst the first seven tracks represent a typical band of the genre, screaming vocals, precision and fast drumming and a solid wall of extreme riffs, this all combined with excellent production and performed to a higher standard than many, it is the last two that offer a little more in the way of construction.

'Veil On The Throng' whilst still sledgehammering us with a huge wall of sound, manage also to throw in some slower darker chord structures and at times the drum patter varies to created a dual sound.

At six minutes 'Uxoricide' takes a slower more melodic approach with use of samples and a near death/doom riff.
Such is the change between the two styles it creates balance between agression and rhythmic energy.

Zygnema is a Mumbai based 4 piece heavy/thrash/groove metal band that mainly focuses on the social/political “fuck-ups” and loves to dig deep down on riffs that are heavy and groove oriented.

The band, over the last 6 years, has won numerous national and international accolades that only do so much to correspond to the powerhouse that the band is. One such accolade is the award for Rolling Stone Metal awards 2011 Best Metal band and Best Metal Song in the popular choice category. Zygnema was formed in December 2006, and since then, have been grooving steadily to the tunes of success and uncompromising determination.

After 3 years of hard work and a year in hibernation, (which the band has artistically paid tribute to in their song, 'Machine state hibernation') the band finally released their debut album. The debut effort, rightfully-titled 'Born of Unity' was released in June 2010.

I shall ignore the intro, which as usual leads straight into the first proper song; 'What Makes Us Human Is Obsolete' which is a kind of technical death metal, whilst the music is good the vocals are way too harsh for me.

The vocal style suites the next one 'Shell Broken' better, this is a punchy thrash/groove song as are the next couple.

'Conflict' is another intro with electronic sounds and distorted speech, this then leads right into 'Invidious' a rather brutal death/thrash workout, followed by 'In-Kog' a much more structured and melodic song with some great sounding guitar riffs and an ambient ending.

Well that ending leads into another intro 'Misguided' with sirens and a childs voice which were it not for a few seconds silence would have slipped right into 'Reform Rebirth' and yep this is more tech death stuff with harsh vocals.


Last song 'A Design To Choose' is almost ten minutes long and features guest vocals from Sunneith Revankar of Bhayanak Maut.
So the first 4 minutes is brutal stuff with some epic and clever dual vocals, then it all goes quiet and out come the acoustic guitars and the rest of the song is a quite brilliant and perfectly sung ballad, a weird way to end but a very impressive song.

From Brighton, devout worshipers of Speed, Violence and The Occult, have spread madness from their inception. With their new EP "The Shrine" about to hit May 31st there is no sign of stopping. With "The Shrine", every second of speed, aggression, and riotous fun is to be savored.
They liberally blends many different styles of Metal and Hardcore into an intense, fiery stew. Riffs with roots firmly planted in the great American Thrash and European Metal traditions peel out of every single song, bolstered by a rhythm section, and featuring solid drumming, that is relentless.

The frenetic pace so characteristic of the genre is kept the entire way, the delivery tight, yet not without the feeling of spontaneity. Creating images of the house that you and your beer-bong buddies proceeded to trash when the neighbour kid's parents left for the weekend.

Intro as a seperate track? Anyway to the first song 'Wormwood' a solid thrash workout with a mixture of death metal and clean vocals, the latter sounding much better, one thing though a horrible snare drum sound, way to tight and tinny for my ears, shame as it spoils this for me.

'Born Of The Blackest Hearts' has a nice clean and powerfull vocal, the music is solid thrash and has a great solo in it, the drums drive the song along, but that snare drum is killing this!

Up next 'Skin From Bone' with its power metal guitar riff over solid drum pedal work is first class, when the speed increases and the death metal vocal comes in this is one that harkens back to the early days, all is going well till that fucking snare again, bang bang bang it goes like a toy tin drum.

Im afraid that the last 2 again just suffer from that snare sound, maybe its the drummer in me, great music well put together, great vocal style.

With many of these song coming in at just a few seconds, i have to say that this is a surprisingly musical album at times, more towards the punk/crust end of the early days of Grindcore.

WAKE are a grindcore band from Calgary, Canada. Formed in 2009.

Have to say the sound quality is very muddy, which is a shame because the heavy death metal styled grind they produce is pretty good, agressive and fast but also some structure to what they do.

Death Metal band Inhuman Depravity from Istanbul, Turkey, formed in late 2013, during the next months they made a 3 track demo, based on the theme that gives band’s name: ‘depravity’. Not so long after,band started to work for the debut album. Mixed & mastered by Ünsal Özata and cover artwork by Rian Oktanto.

'Exhuming The Creator For Own Expediency' starts us off with bloody long somng titles!
This has some sample from (I assume) a horror movie and then some other samples mixed in with quick blasts of music and then the rest is full on nasty Death Metal complete with a vocal style so gruff it would be impossible to sing a long with.

And the rest of the album is just a wall of brutal death metal with some serious grindcore influence in the mix.

Vintage Warlords from America are a morbid piece of rotting nostalgia full of sludgy doom-laden riffs straight from the scattered remains of death metal's humble origins. Monstrous guitars, tortured vocals, and an abandoned sense of security will overwhelm any and all in the underground who dare face the new heirs to the Doom/Death throne! Featuring ex-Abigail Williams bassist, Thomas Haywood (aka Thomas G Plaguehammer).


From its slow start 'Exodus Of Souls' shapes up to be some quality doom laden death metal, the mood changes when the furious double pedal drumwork kicks in and the vocals from hell, sudenly this is a darkend death metal monster.

More fury and some technical guitar playing elevate 'The Invisible Foe' from most other death metal bands songs, as does 'From Orange To Grey'.

Usually when bands mix the 2 genres up we get this hybrid style of Funeral Doom with Death Metal passages, this manages to combine the 2 to create a new noise.

Carnalation was formed in 2008 at Provinssirock in Seinäjoki. It was clear from the start that the band wanted to make music that is straightforward and as brutal as possible. The self-titled first demo was recorded in the beginning of 2009.

“Doomsday Diaries”, an EP was recorded during May-June 2010, It combined elements from both grind core and death metal.

Over the summer 2011 they toured Finland and later headed out to Soundwall studio and recorded their debut album “Deathmask” with producer Peter Tägtgren (Pain/Hypocrisy). “Deathmask”.

The genre listed for this Ep is 'Alternative Death Metal', but what we get is five well executed tracks of technical Death Metal, does what you would expect, solid frantic drum driven agressive songs, gruff vocals, furious guitar solos etc.

Grindcore/Death Metal band from Italy, formed in 2014 to create a blast and scream  mixture of sickening grindcore/death noise, in vein of old school past acts like Napalm Death and Terrorizer.

14 original hi-speed smashes in the face, its incredibly fast and full of screaming and a wall of noise, in other words its a throw back to the birth of the genre without compromise.

In fact you get lulled into this false sense of security right from the start with 'Containment' which has this slow synth pulse, i wonder if they are doing something different? I asked myself before getting smashed over the head by some stunning brutality.

About the only song here that has a bit more to it is 'Mindful Of Pripyat' at 2 minutes and 12 seconds the longest track and one which has distorted doomy bits between the screams.

Add to this 2 cover versions, 'Oblivian Descends' by Unseen Terror and 'Contagion' by Defecation and we have a full and wellm executed album of Grindcore.

Russian doom band first appeared in 2011, this is their second full-length album which invites you to a new journey through the endless sea. The musical material of the album is a logical continuation of the debut release 'Sea Of Infinity' and includes 55 minutes of high-quality doom death metal.

"The crew of the Mare Infinitum ship will exalt you to the space heights, where a massive meteorite attack threatens to eliminate every living being on the surface of planet Earth, and then sank into the dark Lovecraftian depths where unknown Cthulhian creatures plunge you into the abyss of an imminent terror."

So 'The Nightmare Corpse-City Of R’lyeh' may start in a fairly basic way, but as this piece moves forward we get treated to a lot of different ideas, the clean and death metal style of vocals blend perfectly, then add to this some near symphonic elements, funeral doom to heavy almost sludge rock and faster death metal passages.

'Prosthetic Consciousness' is on the face of it a funeral doom paced song, but the way they add the keyboards, almost psychedelic guitar work and keep changing tempo it becomes a different almost progressive rock tune in its construction.

Now 'Alien Monolith God' may sound like a Monster Magnet song title but this 14 minute monster has a different method of attraction.
Its slow, brooding and atmospheric for the first half, the second half adds more melodic guitar and keyboards and a few other sound effects, the clean vocals add clarity in the darkness and again their are progressive rock hints.

If symphonic Funeral Doom were a genre then 'Beholding The Unseen Chapter II' would be a prime example of how to do it and if we add the Progressive tag to that list then 'The Sun That Harasses My Solitude' wuld do the same.

What a brilliant album, a clever and original mix of influences that creates a creative bridge between musical genres.
