Grünt Grünt vs P.U.T- Split EP (CD Review)

Grunt Grunt
01.01
02.02
03.03
04.04
05.05
06.06

Vincent Lozachmeur (Vocals)
Laurent Bourlaud (Drums)
Bertrand Poulain (Guitar)

Grunt-Grunt is an epileptic Unholy Grind'n'Roll band from Angoulême, france formed in 2002. They dont seem to like song titles, have a facebook page and no bio was supplied by record company. So who knows what else the band have done, are etc?

[ P.U.T ]
07.With The Evil
08.Fear
09.Industral Vs Forest
10.Under Most Darkest Sea

Lionel Beyet (Bass/Vocals/Laptop)
Nicolas Beyet (Guitar/Vocals/Laptop)
Loïc Beyet (Studio Guitar/Sampler)

3 brothers, living between Paris/Brussels, started making music in 1998.
A a mix of machines Vs guitars, noise, sludge-metal, industrial and punk to create music madness, emotion, heaviness and anger.
Personal and without concessions, their 5 albums, 8 maxis, 3 live, 7" and various sound experiments, does not disavow their influences (of Godflesh, Killing joke, Sonic Youth while passing by Scorn or Unsane) the band intrigues at the most point.
It's on stage which the band reveal is power, making the same noise as 4-5 piece band, with intense, raw, dirty and disturbing sounds.

First up then is Grunt Grunt, and all they seem to do is grunt and make piggy squeals over some pretty standard fuzzed out short bursts of grindcore.
Only the last track seems to offer more with a slow almost melvins like sludge/crust hybrid.

P.U.T are better, first track 'With The Evil' is more of an industrial/goth song, slow with a simple guitar riff running throughout. The same sounds continue with 'Fear'.

Keeping with the post punk/industrial theme is 'Industral Vs Forest', weird jagged rhythms are punched out with echoes of Bauhaus at their most experimental.

The last track 'Under Most Darkest Sea' has more in the structure, drum patterns are prominent and it has a more dance orientated goth feel to it.

Have to say this is a strange pairing of bands.

Captain Cleanoff - RisingTerror (CD Review)

Ben  (Vocals)
Rohan (Guitar)
Kev (Bass)
Murray (Drums)

Aussie grind band formed around 2009.

So 15 songs that go "Arrrrrrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!" many dont make it to one minute in length, its fast as fuck and echoes back to the early days of grindcore.

But then comes the last track 'Threads' almost 5 minutes long, and its feedback/grunge intro leads into a sludgy/crust piece that is very well done and makes me wonder what if this whole album was like that with just a few of those 30 second blasts, then this could have been a very different kind of monster and may open them up to a wider audience.

Still all in all, as grind goes this is very well produced and avoids the pitfalls that many in this genre fall into.

Jon (Vocals/Guitar)
Juan
Rolo (Drums)

Formed circa 2006 in California they are a four piece crust grind noise never ending force of nature. they say "Our origins are unknown, but our task in life is to defeat the evil that dwells within life's cycle, which is the madness that grows with power."

This is a compilation casette of two previous releases.

First off with 'Hail To The King' not as fast as i expected, this has some good fuzzed ut sludgey bits in between the blast beats, the vocals are as ever with this genre just a screaming noise, what lets this down for me is the complete and total lack of any samples from Bruce Campbells movies, or re creations of with someone shouting or speaking those legendary catchphrases.

So to 'Humanity Deserves To Die' and its the same again, but have to pick out 'Crushed Beneath The Great Weight Of Hate' an oustanding piece of sludge/doom with a crust on top.

Its good but it aint 'Groovy' !

One man grind band from Canada. this mini album was recorded in 2010 but has now secured its first release on give praise records.

Fast as fuck with super piggy grunts mixed with screams to create a wall of noise that may have some actual chords or riffs, but you cant make it out because everything is played so fucking fast, oh but wait a chord and a breakdown, a hit of a snare and then its Arggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ugh, argggggggghhhhhhhhhhh again.

And this isnt even that 60 second burst stuff, oh no these fucking songs go on for 4 minutes plus, until the last few which are thankfully short, at least 'C.H.U.D' has a soundtrack from some movie at the beginning as do a few others.

Suffering Mind - Messiah Of Extermination (LP) / Wake - False (CD) Review

Ben (vocals)
Daro (Drums)
kuchar (Guitar)

Polish grind/death metal band formed circa 2010.

With many of these song coming in at just a few seconds, i have to say that this is a surprisingly musical album at times, more towards the punk/crust end of the early days of Grindcore.

Death Metal band Inhuman Depravity from Istanbul, Turkey, formed in late 2013, during the next months they made a 3 track demo, based on the theme that gives band’s name: ‘depravity’. Not so long after, band started to work for the debut album. Mixed & mastered by Ünsal Özata and cover artwork by Rian Oktanto.

'Exhuming The Creator For Own Expediency' starts us off with bloody long somng titles!
This has some sample from (I assume) a horror movie and then some other samples mixed in with quick blasts of music and then the rest is full on nasty Death Metal complete with a vocal style so gruff it would be impossible to sing a long with.

And the rest of the album is just a wall of brutal death metal with some serious grindcore influence in the mix.

From the Netherlands, came together in 2001 as an old school grindcore band called I scream: Protest, played 2 gigs and after kicking out the only original member changed their name and recorded a demo under the name of F.U.B.A.R. It saw the light of day in the beginning of 2002.

So this is a good old fashioned split 7" vinyl EP!

Up first is 'TFD' and some short, sharpe, shocks, well full on hyper speed grind, 'Bugs' is a long progressive rock worlout, only joking it's 18 seconds of silly voices and then the last track 'Hallucinaut' is by far the ebst here as it has a great bass lead beginning before ending on the stuff that tends to go "Arggghhhhhh".

To FUBAR now, this has a slightly more punky edge to it, more early death/grind crossover delivered with real agression.

This is the kind of stuff you either like or dont like, never find an in-between audience, if it's your thing then this is a good EP to have, and once again worth mentioing that its on vinyl.

Giu (Guitar/Bass/Vocals)

Grindcore/Death Metal band from Italy, formed in 2014 to create a blast and scream  mixture of sickening grindcore/death noise, in vein of old school past acts like Napalm Death and Terrorizer.

14 original hi-speed smashes in the face, its incredibly fast and full of screaming and a wall of noise, in other words its a throw back to the birth of the genre without compromise.

In fact you get lulled into this false sense of security right from the start with 'Containment' which has this slow synth pulse, i wonder if they are doing something different? I asked myself before getting smashed over the head by some stunning brutality.

About the only song here that has a bit more to it is 'Mindful Of Pripyat' at 2 minutes and 12 seconds the longest track and one which has distorted doomy bits between the screams.

Add to this 2 cover versions, 'Oblivian Descends' by Unseen Terror and 'Contagion' by Defecation and we have a full and wellm executed album of Grindcore.

So aside from soundbites in an asian voice, and what i think may well be ronald reagan, some other speech here and there, what we have is what you would expect, that is 19 songs all counted in on the drums followed by blastbeats, fuzzy guitar, and screams and shouts instead of vocals.

All may or may not be done in the best possible taste, thing is if this is your kinda music then its another good example, if on the other hand you can't see the point in this stuff then this will not sway your opinion.

This latest album features a guest appearence from Seb from Bitterness Exhumed.

Well I am 9 tracks in so far and its just a relentless wall of noise, some of the fastest drumming I have heard for ages, the most tortured screams replacing vocals and just endless distortion.

Yet in here are some clever almost sludgelike breakdowns, very slight but somehow manages to get some structure into the mayhem, in the song 'Conspiracy Of Shit' there is some actual "nice" guitar playing as well.

This does what you would expect from 'Grindcore' but its not the usual case of each song sounding exactly the same.

Err okay here we go again and it's piggy squeal vocal time!
The music is pretty solid, punching basslines cut through heavy riffs and some frantic drumming.

Kind of at a loss what to say here, its grindcore, you either like it or dont, we can hardly talk about the complexities of the guitar sound or the intresting timing changes referencing a progressive influence, now can we?

Out of the scattered remains of the gorey Dutch underground the band were stitched together in 2010 by some of the scene’s most notorious undead veterans. Heavily disgruntled with nowadays death metal this conspiracy commenced a piercing rampage against blast beats, technique neurotics, hippies and semi-intellectuals. Blunt as fuck, brutal as hell. Bad-tempered with long greasy hair, barely covering their red necks, and a disturbing fascination for powertools, they grimly resurrected to drive rusty nails of eighties death metal into the third millenium’s cripple carcass!

So here we have 10 slabs (yes 10 because 'Whats In The Box' is a 50 second melodic instrumental) of screaming cookie monster vocals and death grunts blended (In a blender?) with pounding drums and guitars, all chugging along with the subtlety of a sledghammer through a skull as provided by a crazed serial killer in a slasher movie.

Second CD for the guttural groovy goregrind band from Czech Republic, with members from High Purity & ex. Mincing Fury.

Strange start for the first song with almost techno dance rhythms being knocked out, then of course the grind crashes in with its combination of blast beats, death grunts and slightly slower bits, all with a definate groove!

Next song is more in the thrash/groove style with some pig squeals thrown in.
Number three, is slower paced, almost crust/doom in delivery, after that its back to the grind!

Right so not a lot to say here really, apart from i dont understand the song titles and its sung in their native tongue, but the vibe is right so that dont matter, if this is your kinda thing then add this one to your collection.

So 19 full on grindcore songs, speed is matched by agression and the vocals are "pig Squeal" on the whole, not sure if the words are grunted and screamed in english, czech or klingon, but then with this type of music it seems to not matter, this is about mood and the mood is smash yourself into the guy next to you whilst covered in beer!

Only track 20 'Wolverine Blues' a cover of the Entombed song has any real musical structure and they do the song well.

Canadian crust/grindcore band formed in 2006.
Not much in the way of info but this is from their band profile:
"Many beers ago... in a bar not too far away, a band began their journey to release their agression and hatred created by their surrounding environment unto the ears of
an audience not unlike themselves, in the form of music. Fast, Loud, Brutal music.

Playing several shows around their home town of Sault Ste. Marie and progressively honing their skills as musicians along the way they are now ready to reveal their music to a wider and unknowing audience.
With music consisting of fast paced shredding guitar riffs, Brutally intricate bass riffs, and plenty of deadly blast beats.
Lyrics consisting of drinking, the problems of society, religion, the environment, and the problem of man in general.
All through the eyes of three drunk assholes. we are Shit Liver".

Expecting yet another selection of 2 minute hyper fast blasts with grunts and screams all counted in with an opening tap of the drumsticks, i was almost right (No obvious count ins) but certainly the first 3 songs deliver.

Then comes 'Hellen Kellers' a strange almost crust/doom sound with some sort of spoken piece over it, then it turns to the blast beats and screams, cant understand a fucking word he is singing, however that never harmed Napalm Death in the old days and just like said band its about the written words not the vocal performance, you see through the screams are these words -
"Religion in general, something I despise.
Blindly following a leader who seems so divine
False messages of hope have been consumed by your mind.
Closed up when you found your fill of numerous lies.
No time for other school of thought, atheist paradigms.
The anti christ is everyone, the world is paralyzed,
By fear, reveal the glaring eyes,
Of a death machine, you dared to let it survive."

Now thats some pretty clever writing!

Next song that stands out is 'Its Not My Problem' first of all its nearly 5 minutes long, thats actual music not 3 minutes of silence with a quick burst at the end.
Starts out typical of the genre, then moves towards Death Metal and end up with that crust/doom style again, which i like a lot, this also returns on the final song 'Shit Will Prevail'.

There is more to this band than meets the eye and in some ways their beer and noise image doesn't do them justice, neither in some ways does the name, these guys are good at what they do and maybe if they took some time to think about what they could produce in the future they might reach a bigger audience.

They then recruited Max from Agents Of Abhorrence on vocals and quickly started playing shows and recorded a 7”. A year after forming they headed over to the U.S to play some shows in the northeast. Upon return to Australia the 7” was released by Crucificados and 625 Productions, home to their heroes Immortal Fate.

05.Dawn In The Rotting Paradise

Aaron Whitsell (Guitar/Bass)

Described as "A new breed in slasher grind!"
The Kentucky based band feature ex members of Blood Freak.
And as thats all the info i was given lets move to the ep which has four original songs and a cover of "Dawn..." orginally by a band called Heamorrhage.

'Cirque Du Absurd' opens with some weird horror circus samples then just goes on to destroy everything in its wake for 90 seconds of sheer (shear?) speed and power.

Next track 'Creepy Things' foregoes the intro and just goes for pure noize overkill.

A spoken intro for 'Shear Terror' and then more of the same, screams, mental drumming, over the top riffs!
Exactly the same including intro for 'I Strangled Mine' and then the cover at the end, this one has slightly more musical structure - but dont let that put you off its still fucking brutal and fun.
