Having reviewed their new ep last month complete with the usual mini bio etc  (Look Whos Stalking Review) I shall get straight to the album.

A little symphonic music introduces us to 'Good To Be Bad', the haunting keyboard sound remains throughout the song, its so simple yet somehow it's understated appearence holds you in its own right.The song itself is slow, powerfull and the vocals have a raw growl to them.Then right at the end comes a killer solo to end of one helluva opener!

'Scream Come True' is a pretty straight forward rocker, reminiscent of "Raise Your Fist" era Alice Cooper.

Picking up the pace next with 'Drink The Blood', a hint of good old rock n roll lurks here, some really solid pedal work from Pip, great backing vocals and this one really drives along with its sing-a-long style.
Another instatntly recognisable solo is then perfectly executed but then the music drops out for a near tortured vocal full of emotion, finally the band join in to close.

Great bass playing kicks off 'Home Is Where The Haunt Is', this is another slower paced song, quite typical of the horror rock style, this one stalks the speakers with menace.

'Look Whos Stalking' and this one sure packs a punch, it's faster and heavier than previous songs, definatley like a jam session between the Misfits and Motorhead, add some riff loaded guitar work and a shout it out loud backing and this is one killer song.

Staying with the previous vibe comes 'Exorsister', not quite as furious, but has all the swagger and more of those infectious backing vocals.

Oh wow 'Modified' is really different, the vocal effect reminds me of Corey Taylor is his darker spoken moments, this is a dark and werid gothic monster, slow and anthemic treatment from the drums and guitar and some clever multi tracked vocal styles.

Some nice hints of Thrash Metal in 'Never Sleep Again', punchy riffs and some frantic drumming absolutley sledgehammer this one through my speakers.
Towards the end it gets weird, first with something that sounds like its from the soundtrack to clice barkers Candyman, then some strange vocal chants.

Some space related samples, awesome little synth pattern and near gothic guitar picking and 'Life In Space' presents itself as another dark, neo gothic downbeat song.
If the Peter Murphy vocal delivery wasn't enough to behold it gets the weird treatment with some f/x as well.

Relaxed and chilled as I was after that last song, my ears get blown up by 'End Of The Line' more of that upbeat horror rock delivered with real passion and understanding of the genre.

'Creeping Beauty Part 2' starts off dangerously like a ballad, fortunatley that doesn't last long and it picks up, but I have to say I do find it a tad average, it's mid paced but doesn't seem to go anywhere.What happend to Part One? Ahh just remembered it's an old TDQM song :-)

The fact that 'You Are What We Eat' includes a lyric that says "welcome to the jungle" seems to indicate a touch of Guns N Roses and you know the overall glam/metal/rock n roll feel of this song could fit in with the classic era of that band.

Bringing the mood right down next with 'Mommy', a melancolic and moody gothic tune, that candyman sound is back as well, another stand out song thats for sure.

'Possessed (Acoustic)' well not that acoustic as there is synth on it, the passionate and tortured vocal delivery is first class.

Finally 'Chopping Mall (Remake)' another old TDQM song given the ABD treatment, this one adds a little more agression with the guitar and is a nice way to end a brilliant and well executed album.

Currently putting the finishing touches to what will be the last ever album from these British Doom legends. Produced by Lee Dorrian and Garry Jennings, with assistance from Jaime Gomez Arellano, The Last Spire is scheduled for an April 20013 release via Rise Above Records. Tracklisting is as follows;

The track will appear on an exclusive Rise Above Records CD sampler to be given away with Classic Rock Magazine towards the end of the same month.

In related news, Septic Tank, a band featuring Cathedral members Scott Carlson, Garry Jennings and Lee Dorrian will make their debut live appearance at The Garage, Highbury & Islington on Friday 3rd May.

Septic Tank will release a very limited vinyl only EP titled The Slaughter via MCR Records, Japan, to coincide with the show. They will have a limited number of colour copies on sale exclusively at the event.

Formed in Summer 2012 as Critical Mass the London based band brings classic rock bang up-to-date with authentic riffs, strong vocals and a heavy bass lines.
Featuring past and present members of Akercocke, Chaosanct, Fen and Skaldic Curse the band now inhabits an infinitely more accessible rock territory while still managing to preserve a raw metal energy.
Drawing on a potent blend of influences including such masters of the genre as Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy to produce a classic rock sound that is uniquely their own.

Changing their name to Bad Son in November they have released a promo cd and continue to gig, with more planned for next year.

'Wasters Of The World' is a mid paced rocker full of great guitarwork and a superb vocal delivery from dave, really nice to hear him sing as opposed to scream.

The second track 'Crawl Across To Me' sounds like a track from Saxon's "Strong Arm Of The Law" album but with a much darker vocal.
A seriously kick ass guitar solo thrown in as well complete with high pitched harmony vocals.

Finally 'Mother Mary' starts with a Hendrix style guitar riff then moves into a near sleeze rock meets blues sound.

Overall a very impressive debut, classic rock in the modern style absolutley loaded with superb guitar and vcals backed by solid bass and drums.
Anyone who knows Dave from Chaosanct or Spitting Blood will simply be blown away by his "Singing" voice and while Paul has always been a class act guitarist the black and death metal genres he's better known for have never allowed him to play like this!

STUNNING!!!!!

Drawing on influences as diverse as Classical music to Black Metal, Xenochord have been creating original and complex "Progressive Death Metal" since 2007.
Describing themselves with a simple statement, "British Standard - German Quality - Scandinavian Style - HUNGARIAN PRIDE", the latter refering to their heritage.

Perhaps another important element to their music is a love of 'Absinthe', a quality to be admired from all perspectives!

Their debut album "Absinthe" is due out shortly and was mixed and produced by Tilman Wolff-Moore (Spitting Blood/Chaosanct/Samsas Traum) & James McIlroy (Cradle Of Filth/Chaosanct/Order Of Apollyon) who also makes a guest appearence on the track 'Greed'.

'Confession', Generic and brutal kick off to introduce you to a different breed of metal, sure it has the growling vocals and speed you would expect but this is in a class of its own.

The title track and a way of life, 'Absinthe' from the second the synth intro starts it creates this almost symphonic and rhythmic mood, its slow and pounding and intoxicating and is a fitting tribute to the true king of spirits.

With the mood now set 'Delirium' arrives, a perfect song in every way.The synth and bass intro reminisent of Faith No More's 'Epic' opens up to sweeping guitar solos then fires into devistating power and drum driven agression.
The lyrics are something to behold as well : "I can hear the trees talking, In the blooming desert, I can see the flowers walking, High over the mother earth,
Deep under the silted sea, Sun is shining with dark light,With closed eyes I can see, I can touch the screaming clouds".


'Sunday Morning' always a live favourite, awesome melodic guitar into powerchord structures to die for.

'Refuse To Obey' has an awesome atmospheric sampling intro and superb synth sounds intertwined with a fast becoming trademark of power, deathly vocals and melody.

'Greed' displays furious drumming, simplistic rhythm guitar, moves into a fear factory hi tech metal section and yes an awesome display of riffage from Mr McIlroy.

'Gasping For Air', dark and brooding, once again proving that superb musicianship and expert production can help create pure aural pleasure.

You would not believe the beauty of the pure symphonic intro to 'Maimed By Love' it's up there with 'Therion', then comes the full on metal attack, solid bass and drum work again punctuated by powerfull rhythms and outstanding solos and not forgetting that vocal attack.

Ending with something completly different the song 'To The Living' has another atmospheric intro and fantastic guitar from gabe, but instead of kicking in to a metal piece sticks with orchestration and spoken word, setting an ambient and calming end to a devistating album of sheer brilliance!

A few months back band mastermind lakis said "It's hard to say what Dirty Agnes are about
- all we know is that it's a lot of fun in rehearsals, and that we did what we considered
to be a one off show. We are however, having a band meeting soon to discuss the possibility of turning it into a real band, so watch this space!".

The band, which is something of a supergroup, features Lakis from Nemhain/Love & Bullets
on guitar and vocals, he also produced and mixed the song.

Laura is ex Area 54, Ravi is from My Vitriol and James from Chaosanct/Cradle Of Filth.

Well this month the first song was released with a promise of more to come.

Coming in at just under 4 minutes this is a catchy high energy post grunge slice of
classic rock n roll that puts current darlings of the scene 'Reckless Love' to shame.
The song also has a good use of a movie sample half way through which throws in a nice
edge and reminds me of a Rob Zombie song.

What can you say solid drumming, pumping bass, great guitar sound and confident vocals, it delivers!

If this is to be the direction and sound of the band then Lakis really has no choice but
to go with it all guns a blazing!!!

Formed in summer 2008 by former Aborted members Daniel Wilding and BST, the band began work on the first offering following the induction of guitarist James McIlroy (Cradle Of Filth/Chaosanct) and bassist Peter Benjamin (Akercocke).

The opus, entitled “The Flesh”, concentrates on the passage from the spiritual to the material,

and unlike the clinical sounding productions that intoxicate the metal industry.

The Order’s first release aspires to praise the extreme metal scene of the late 80’s/early 90’s.

The cult of Apollyon is set on dessiminating the message of our God the Supreme Being. It will drive the masses to accept the indubitable domination of the Holy Spirit and to repent their sins before the impending Judgement.

The disloyal scum shall writhe in Eternal Suffering, while a chosen elite shall bathe in glory and rapture. Unconditional devotion is the key.The tag line is more a statement of intent than a mere slogan:

"For his Name. For his Glory. For his Victory. Judgement is upon us. Join The Order."

A nice intro leads us into an aural onslaught of powerhouse drumming, well executed riffs and screaming vocals that have much more in common with Black metal than the more obvious extreme metal that they wanted to emulate.

In fact the opening song 'Ich Bin Das Licht' would not be out of place on Dimmu Borgir's 'In Sorti Diabol' album.

'Word' also has a near symphonic quality to it, however the speed and power keep this firmly in the "extreme" but clearly outclassing the majority of genre exponents by a clear mile.

The powerchord driven and brooding 'Never' blends rhythm with short bursts of high velocity metal to perfection, superb lyrics and the overall production and structure make this for me the best song on the album.

Track 5 with its inspired title 'Fifth' creates that wall of energy that requires a seatbelt on the sofa to appreciate, especially when played at 100% volume.

Both 'White Dust' and 'Four Beasts' stick to traditional form with blast beats punctuating the mayhem, with added guitar solos to die for.

As promised the song 'Flesh Of Yhvh' delivers on all levels, near demonic vocals backed with punchy chord work truly harken back to the glory' days whilst retaining the modern edge and influence.

The horror movie score quality to 'Ex-Voto' creates a sense of impending doom and the haunted vocal effects makes for an ambience that will require a change of underwear for some.

Finally 'L'Orgueuil' deals with the subject of pride, musically its a real headbangers delight with a solid heavy rhythm and enough melodic breakdowns to recover.

This was a gig held for the joint birthdays of James (Chaosanct/Cradle Of Filth) and
Amber (Nemhain), hosted by Laura London.

NEMHAIN
The rock n roll plague acoustic version and what a version.This was nothing short of stunning, the acoustic arrangements of the rock songs really worked, I dont think i have ever heard Ambers voice sound some emotional before, she put over every song with pure class.
Both Lakis and Sam excelled themselves on guitar, Adrian managed to restrain himself
from hitting the drums hard and Lisa's mellow bass lines punctuated each song with
ease.

Perhaps the stand out song here was the cover of CCR's 'Bad Moon Rising' usually an
upbeat tune but now turned into a dark and moody downbeat goth/doom song with some
outstanding slide work from Sam who also did some amazing backing vocals as well.

FIVE SECOND RULE
You know what you are going to get when the guy in the white hat shouts "time for some
fucking rock n roll", you get a 30 minute party!
Tonights set was a little chaotic but the songs just carry through and get everyone
dancing and singing, the venue went crazy on the final song 'Ambition'.

A mixture of thrash/death metal but with some huge melodic elements make this
headlining set quite something to see.Demonic vocals and massive amounts of riffing created a wall of sound that had everybody headbanging.

Formed by Woundz, Astynax, VX, Monolith and Theutus in late 2000 with the idea of creating nihilistic and progressive black metal.
Eventually a 2 track demo tape 'Funeral Eclipse' was released in late 2001 and was quickly followed by the 'Hated by Matter' itself demo in 2002. During this period the band played a number of live shows within the UK underground scene and began to gain a reputation for putting on cold, hateful performances.

In late 2003 they entered Astynax's very own Shockwave Studios to record the 'Contagious Psychic Misery' EP which was released in 2004 on Forgotten Wisdom Productions. Soon after this recording, original guitarist VX left the fold and the band continued as a four-piece. Support slots with Enslaved and Lugubrum followed and in mid-2005, the band once again entered Shockwave studios to record their debut album 'Pathogen'.

Early 2006 saw a number of changes within the band line-up - original drummer Theutus left at the start of the year to be replaced by Vermin. In addition, the band returned to a two-guitar line-up with the recruitment of Scapula (Paul Scanlon from Akercocke) during this same period. The remainder of 2006 was spent working on what would become 'World Suicide Machine', this material sees them build on the twisted, progressive approach to black metal evident on the debut yet taken to even more extreme depths, down darker and ever more warped sonic paths.

This recording attracted the attention of Norway's Dark Essence Records who subsequently offered the band a deal and now finally its released after 2 years!

"This album takes the blackened brutality and labyrinthine structures of the first album, and injects more intensity, atomsphere and spiralling passages, creating a unique and complex album that journeys through black metal, thrash and progressive rock".

Well thats what the record company say and to be honest that pretty much sums this up.
It is devistatingly heavy and complex full of distortion, cutting edge guitarwork, screaming death vocals, huge drums and pounding bass.
Each track seems to almost scream of full on black metal then switch to opeth like musical structures, doom influences and classical as well, it has everything.

Solsikk were formed by Chris and Matt after they left technical death metal band Biomechanical, there was a desire to form a band that could fuse that energy but blend it with melody and female vocals.

The ep kicks off with an immence bass heavy riff, but quickly the harmony vocals and musical breakdowns show that there is much more on offer here than female lead agressive heavy metal, in the style of say 'Otep'.

It is the heavy riffs and precision drumming mixed with pounding bass work that provides an outstanding backdrop to the multi tracked vocal expertise of Vikki.

"Your Blistering Tongue" is a really good fucking track, the phased guitar intro melts into some fantastic drumming with a slow vocal, it just moves along with a perfect head banging rhythm.

Finally this all too short ep ends with a ballad (shock horror!), fear not my metal loving Viking hordes for this will slay you with its beautiful vocals and atmospheric keyboard backing, but wait...for this song unleashes some of the finest guitarwork i have heard for a long time.

It is simply stunning!

Hot of the press in time for last weekends 'Tsunami Festival' in Holland and completed just a few days before that, this is the second ep from the self styled "Blackened power Metal" supergroup featuring ex members of Cradle Of Filth, Biomechanical and Akercocke.

Opening song is a full speed onslaught with Dave's amazing vocal attack of screams followed by pure singing.It is a very drum driven track reminicent of early Satyricon, and also contains some great guitar solos.

'Death Note' continues in the same vein and yet again it is the vocal style of Dave that grabs your attention, the opening part has an almost arabic styled harmony before hitting that Dani Filth scream that he does so well.The song has a line in it "This is the time for retribution" and it sticks in your head instantly.

Now we come to the song i have been looking forward to since i first heard it performed live last december, 'Oppenheimer'.
It starts with a haunting riff with "Tubed" speech over it, it has a wonderful rhythmic drum backing before picking up the pace into an almost gothic/black metal epic like Paradise Lost.Im slightly dissapointed by some of the effects put on the vocal as it slightly spoils what Dave is singing (But then im used to hearing it live where dave just lets rip).
What i love about the song is the way it just moves, with 2 such accomplished guitarists in the band it is surprisng that there are no solos in the piece, but somehow that adds to the songs emotion because it allows it flow without breaks.
It is a masterpiece and it is aided by the final piece 'Trinity' which is basically a recording of the 'Enigma 2000' numbers code that used to be broadcast over shortwave radio since the second world war, to this day nobody really knows what they were for, with an ambient soundscape underneath.

Overall this is a great progression in both music and production, it is a slick well executed ep full of originality and should see the band marked out as something "special".
I look forward to the album and hope that they dont put too many effects on dave's voice next time.

Tonight the band seemed pretty pissed off about something and it came over like they didnt
want to be there, which is a shame because they played a great set and got a good reaction
from the crowd even though they didnt pull anyone themselves.

Hailing from Burnley "oop north" they came all the way to Holloway road the quartet played
their hearts out with a set of stunning heavy metal songs delivered with great musicianship
and humour.The gathered masses soon warmed to their infectious tunes and much headbanging ensued.

Check out the video for the funny bit where their incredibley tall guitarist bashed his
head on the celing mounted speaker, later in the set he jumped off the stage into the crowd
and sent them crazy.

They have an album coming out soon, i suggest you grab a copy and check them out.Got to get
these guys back soon.

XENOCHORD
I say this in every review but they just keep getting better every time i see them.Tonights set was awesome their sound was perfect and the keyboards were a pleasure to
listen to.
Their ever increasing fanbase were treated to some amazing songs like 'Absinthe', 'Sunday
Morning' and my personal favourite 'Delirium' with its hypnotic hawkwind like bassline
going into some brain crunching progressive death metal.

They entertain on every level, so go see them next time they play.

CHAOSANCT
The return of the "Blackend Power Metal" supergroup making its debut with new guitarist
Paul Scanlon.It was paul who kicked off tonights set by playing the opening riff to "Slither" holding it for nearly a minute getting louder and louder then the rest of the band exploded into the song.

Their performance was a masterclass of unrelenting power, Dave's voice was note perfect
from every growl to every high ear blasting scream, both guitarists attacked the strings as
if their very life depended on it, tilmans bass pumped right through your chest and the
drums were set to pure overkill.

Nothing and i do mean nothing (Broken bass string and moving bass drum) could stop them as
song gathered pace with agression and melody.
Outstanding tracks were "Oppenheimer" and "Dark Directions".
We want more!!!!!!

SNAKEBITE
3 words come to mind here "Southern Trend Kill".These lads have nailed that Pantera vibe
and added their own twist.
Very impressive and full of energy with hell for leather vocals and punching guitarwork and playing songs from their impressive EP 'Never Grow'.

Playing an aftershow set their classic brought the evening down (I mean that in a good way)you just cannot beat this band for ac/dc influenced rock that appeals to everybody.Great to headbang to and after the evenings aural onslaught it was nice to hear something
less agressive.They also threw in an amazing cover of "Live Wire".
