Father Merrin & Clegane - Split EP (CD Review)

Clegane

01. Black Painted Girl
02. Through Wounds

Laurent (Bass/Vocals)
Rudy (Drums)
KooTôh (Guitar)

French Doom trio formed in 2015, they draw on different influences including Psych and Grunge.

After a digital EP in 2017, the first cycle is completed by the physical LP "Funeral at Sea" released in 2018.

Just the two tracks on their side, but stills notches up 17 minutes of what I can only describe as pure Cathedral worship!
First piece is slow, powerful with a slightly gruff vocal; the second has a more psychedelic feel with some great vocals. Both songs may tick the Doom box, but this is far more accomplished than a lot of bands produce.

Rating 10/10
For Fans Of: Cathedral, Electric Wizard, Witchsorrow

Father Merrin

01. Those Who Worshipped The Stone
02. A Prophet Self Denied
03. I, Son Of Grigori

J (Bass)
S (Drums)
JB (Guitars)
A (Guitar/Vocals)

Taking their name from The Exorcist this French band formed in 2009 from the ashes of ’Circle Of Hate’.
Performing their own self styled “Possessed doom metal”
By the spring 2011 they began performing on stage, building foundations for the solid live act reputation they now own.
May 2014: the release of the All Is Well That Ends In Hell EP allows the band to get more gigs throughout France, as well as in Belgium and Germany, supporting international heavyweights such as ‘Goatess’.
A troubled period follows, which sees the congregation face several line-up reshuffles, yet continuing to play live and write.

Three tracks here making up just 18 minutes, this is not Doom as we normally expect, if anything it sounds like slow death metal, which gives it that early 1990’s Death-Doom feel as pioneered by bands like ‘Winter’.

Rating 8/10
For Fans Of: Age Of Taurus, Thergothon, Lockersludge, Whorehouse Massacre
