All that survives from the strange world of the Electric Residence, allegedly are two acetates, one reel to reel tape and a cassette tape.

These are taken from the cassette tape, I would imagine the sound experiments were from the late 1960's and the Residents performance from 1973.

Anyway, its weird stuff, NOT easy listening.

1991 rock album, full of great ideas that didn't quite hit the mark.

Hard Rock, acid house, protest songs all mixed in with keyboards, guitars etc, hell even a sitar!

Got 2 Ks from Kerrang! mag back in the day.

Album was produced by A. Arthurs (Neil Christian/Crushed Butler).

Best known for their divisive debut, 2018's "THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED", the band have decided to continue their assault on black metal as a scene and genre this time by merging black metal with many genres of "non-kvlt" music.

Frontman Richard explains: "With THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED we used genre trappings to assault black metal with its own aural aesthetics. Raw guitars, sloppy riffs, gurgled vocals, and the bass turned way down. This time around we wanted to 'pervert' this 'sacred' music by pairing it alongside genres that most 'true' fans hate."

CROWN OF JOY (A SUBLIME SUN THRIVING AMONGST DYING STARS) has all the anger and ferocity of previous albums THE BLACK METAL SCENE NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED and WINGS OF THE JOYFUL but merges that fury with genres like trap, RnB, jazz, j-pop, hip-hop, and hyper pop to create a unique experience that old school black metal fans will absolutely abhor.

Well 'Lay Down' may start in a traditional distorted, funeral doom style but something a little different is thrown in.

'Ghost Me' has some sweet harmony vocals intercut with some technical Death Metal whilst 'Dread' is a pretty straight forward Blackened Death Metal assault.

Some symphonic styled Black Metal with 'Grey Rainbow' is well executed and followed by some rappy stuff backed with nice piano playing.

'Obfuscation of Intent' just sounds like Dethklok!', Nailed Deity' mixes some beautiful piano with basic Metal.

Outstanding track 'Again & Again' is a fantastic brutal Death Metal attack which evolves into some great techno, this is followed by another great track 'None / Nothing', slow piano and narration into mid paced Death Metal, the mix really works well creating the perfect balance.

'Judgement and Justice' is weird, sort of hip-hop rappy thing, vocal works well but somehow sounds slightly comical.

Metal meets Pop with 'Slitting Their Throats', again suffers from bad mixing, nothing wrong with the metal meets pop idea, but just sounds like two separate songs randomly cut together.

'Kvlt After School Xbox Kommando' is so far the only track that sounds like Black Metal from ye olde tymes, I'm guessing the lyrics are not serious.

Finally we end on 'Sublime Sunshine' another mainstream melodic Death metal tune.

Mr. Weeks is clearly a talented musician, but the subversion of Black Metal is not apparent, there was a chance to be as innovative and controversial as Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were to mainstream metal back in the day, it just hasn't worked.

I will have to wait for someone to come up with a Black (metal) Eyed Peas.

Something different grabbed my attention, a minimalist heavy metal styled band without a bassist from Poland.

It is suggested that we "imagine the White Stripes if Jack White had learned his blues from Tony Iommi instead of Son House", pretty sure White owed his style to Jeff Beck however I get the point being made.

Wij (pronounced ‘veey’) is the Polish spelling of “Viy”, the title of a supernatural horror story by Russian writer Nikolai Gogol. It is also the Polish word for Myriapod, a centipede-like species which thrives in darkness and lives off decay.

‘Dziwidło’ (pronounced ‘gee-vee-dwoh’), on the other hand, is a monstrous tropical plant called Amorphophallus titanum, common name being the 'corpse flower’.

This is their first full-length release, featuring ten band originals plus a cover of 'In League with Satan' ('W przymierzu z diabłem'), by legends Venom, all produced by Haldor Grunberg known for his work with Behemoth, Dopelord and Moanaa.

Blasting off with 'Zmij' and I do mean "Blasting", one helluva sound is crashing through the speakers, raw, heavy and powerful, the vocals, oh wow, full of screaming power!

The title track is a different beast, dirty proto doom meets some sludge, slow, brooding and the screaming vocal is toned down to some beautiful tones.

After some heavy blues with 'Czerw' comes the utter madness that is 'In League With Satan', a freaky intro and then that drum pattern kicks in, the vocals are crazed, in Polish the words seem even more angry and dare I say 'Venomous', oh and some killer riffing in there as well.

'Wielki-Martwy', another proto doom monster and then with 'Kat' its full on thrash assault and that guitar, at times it sounds like a distorted bass.

For a perfect mix of Doom, Psych and Heavy Metal then crank up 'Lapacz Snów' another superb vocal rings out! And the final song does the same.

To sum up: It may be sung in Polish that makes no difference, the performance is such that it can be enjoyed at full volume!

Cosmic Black Metal from Sweden? Well that's what the bio said and it grabbed my attention.

There are few bands who can blend Black metal, Industrial metal and Electronica and create a finished product.

This CD comprises of three previously released Transmission EPs, titled Transmission I, II, and III, now released digitally as a remixed and remastered compilation album.

Well I'm pretty much blown away by this, first couple of songs certainly blend electronics with Black Metal, but for me 'Call From The Void' just levels up. Great synth sounds, full on drum patterns, screaming deathly vocals, wall of pure guitar noise, yes this is the stuff! and then towards the end it goes all weird with synths and samples, perfect ending!

This never ending aural assault continues, lifted on occasion with some simple yet effective synths such as on 'E.T.A.I.'

'Zero One' creates that rarest of paradox', a danceable, techno black metal onslaught, which we return to on the last song 'Ekpyrotic Gateways', fucking amazing!

Formed in 2014, Esses has gradually become one of the pillars in the thriving Oakland and San Francisco underground. Encompassing elements of deathrock and dark post-punk shrouded under a veil of forbidding doom.

The Oakland five-piece, featuring current and former members of Altar de Fey, Black Ice, The Phantom Limbs, Red Voice Choir, and The Holy Kiss — carry through transcendently dark live performances with surreal and sublime vitalities.

A follow-up to the 2018’s EP, 'Offering', this album deals with the topics of mental health, memory and trauma.

Starting with 'The Source' and culminating in 'Schism' the record progresses with a continuous storytelling approach throughout nine meticulously ordered numbers.

Album really kicks in on track two with 'Pierce the Feeling' with its heavy, dark and twisted approach and some stunning vocals.

'Infinite Void' is another superb example of how, when done right, you can take all the influences, wear them on your sleeve and yet still be original.

A much heavier approach on 'Little Mouse', this is screaming, guitar laden, drum thumping, goth/metal delivered with confidence that it will hit every sense at the same time with a sledgehammer.

Creepy ambience is served cold with 'Faceless Past', followed with some more (slightly) upbeat rhythms for 'Caged Beasts' before our last song 'Schism' which blends mid paced instrumentation with haunting vocals.

Italian band formed in 2010, Various line-up changes mark a radical change in Sorry, Heels' sound, abandoning rock standards and diverting their compositions towards electronic music, while maintaining references and sounds linked to new wave and early post-punk.

This album is a work dedicated to the love journey of a woman who faces infatuation, falling in love, disappointment and frustration. Both the lyrics and the sounds were written in an attempt to evoke all the various stages she has gone through.

So we have the concept Starting from infatuation, 'Through the End' and passion with 'She Burns'.

These are delivered with haunting vocals, minimal synth and drum backing and occasional guitar, each perfectly balanced to create quite a cold electronic ambience.

We continue with rejection on 'Something Real', my fave track so far, all the previous elements are still present this has the added aural pleasure of some dark gothic guitar work.

Obsession gets two songs, 'Follow Signs' and 'The Spell's Ballad' as does loneliness, with 'My Doll's House' and 'Another Lapse'. The latter of which becomes my second fave song here with more dark and disturbing gothic undertones and some great Bass riffs.

Finally, repentance with 'The Void' followed by a somewhat depressing acceptance that nothing will change with 'The End of Desires'.

XCIII is an Avantgarde Rock / Metal project located in France. The bands name is a reference to Charles Baudelaire's "Les Fleurs du Mal", poem 93, titled "A une passante".

Its aim is to combine different styles going from Black Metal to Trip Hop with no limitation, but with the will to keep a musical and lyrical coherence between all the tracks.

A kind of "Art Total" where music, lyrics and pictures respond to each other. The former idea to play a folk black metal disappeared by the time Guillaume composed new songs, which were more open to new horizons, including Experimental and Progressive elements.

The gradual transformation of XCIII has reached a provisional end with The Blue EP, which was released on the 10th of December 2019 to celebrate the ten years of the existence of the project. Even more sensual and direct, it overlaps all the band's experiments of the last decade, even more eclectic, with some hint of industrial Metal, but also more pop-influenced atmospheres. Several songs were specially composed in order to be played live. The 2021 digipack version contains a bonus track as well as two remixes by BartosAntos and by Maquerelle.

'Sway' starts with a simple guitar riff then via a sampled speech begins to form with synthesizers, as it builds female vocals come in and the song starts to take form, relentless in its building of instrumentation the final piece creates a nice easy to listen 'pop song'.

Getting a touch weirder is 'Abstract' reversed synth pulses and sampled vocal builds and then the whole song changes with some heavy guitar playing and and some more spoken words.

Track Three is 'Life Seeks Death' a strange but well composed mixture of pop music with "hints" of the heavier stuff.

It is 'The Blue' that stands out for me, a superb atmospheric near gothic song, haunting vocals and great keyboard work.

'Salt' has an 80's sound that would have been perfect for '4AD'.

That just leaves us the two remixes, which don't seem to add anything interesting to the normal versions and seem a touch pointless.

This album is full of atmospheric and creepy sounds, where bells and keyboards intertwine with jazz rhythms and strange timings.

Many of these pieces would easily fit with White Noise An Electric Storm In Hell from 1969.

For the best part of two decades American doom band Hour Of 13 have made quite an impact under the careful watch of mainman Chad Davis.

Along the way and over the course of three albums and numerous EPs, HOUR OF 13 have built a formidable discography that's amassed a fanatic following awaiting each offering Davis and his rotating cast of cohorts creates.

This is the first new recordings in over eight years, Black Magick Rites was available digitally on November 1st, 2020 for only 24 hours. Just as uniquely, Black Magick Rites also marks the first album where Davis handles not only all instruments, but also all vocals.

From the off, this is a superb album, none of the usual clichés of twenty minute dirges and stereotypical "Occult" lyrics.

That this album was produced by one (very talented) man is astounding.

Amazing vocals, great guitar playing, solid drumming brilliantly mixed together, cannot fault this in anyway, shape or form.

They mix Rock N Roll with 70's hard rock and a straight forward attitude that has seen them tour all over Europe and release three albums.

What we have here is ten solid tracks of no nonsence hard rock, a couple of tracks 'Down In A Hole' and 'By Your Side' stick out as above average rockers, great guitar playing backed by solid bass and drums.

'Band Of Brothers' is a tribute to Lemmy and manages to avoid sounding like Motorhead.

LM Cooke - Sun Song (Bandcamp Download Review)

LM Cooke - Sun Song (Bandcamp Download Review)

01. Sun Song (Demo)

LM Cooke (Vocals/Keyboards)

It has been a long time since we have heard from 'LM', too long in fact.

'Sun Song' may just be a mere demo, but it shows amazing progress since 2017s debut album 'Nursey Rhymes for the Apocalypse'.

Inspired by, well in LM's words "This is probably not a traditional sun or summer song in any way, shape or form. It came to me one evening at rush hour in Euston Station while waiting for a train home, but I don't think it reflects any of the bustle that surrounded me at the time."

Such a simple basic rhythm builds the tension, added to that a superb double tracking vocal, multi layered backing vocals, this is a slow and brooding example of well crafted Neo-Folk with some very dark lyrics, oh the sun may be bright yet somehow the line "Let it burn" takes on a different meaning.

I look forward to more demos and hopefully a full album in the near future.

Just 500 copies of this album were made, I managed to get my copy from the good old Record & Tape Exchange in Camden back in 1983, wondered what the hell I had brought when I eventually got around to playing it.

I was drawn to the record based soley on the Pre-Raphelite picture on the label, musically it reminded me of The Residents with its weird mix of sound collage and experimental electronics.

It seems the band were essentially two brothers; Richard and Phillip Rupenus, it has since emerged that other contributions came from Nigel Jacklin (Alien Brains), Sean Breadin and John Mylotte both from the band 'Funeral Danceparty'.

The band quickly vanished, perhaps the world was not ready for their experiments in sound, yet in 2019 the name started to appear again with Fluxxus duo 'Kommissar Hjuler Und Frau' and only recently a brand new 7" single called 'I am as I Have Spoken', the world finally came to accept this for of music as art or is it art as music, either way a fantastic record.

Rocking Corpses - Death Blues (CD Review)

Track Listing:

Maggot Mike (Bass)

Tom Bones (Drums)

Finlands 'Rocking Corpses' were born at the end of 2007 out of Tony's passion for all things horror, death metal, blues, injected with some very dark humour. Some months later Laze got also excited about the idea and joined the project on vocals. Eventually, in 2009 two demo songs were recorded and finally in 2011 the first full album "Rock 'n' Rott" was finished and released a year later.

By 2017 Mike and Pete had their own project called Grit going on and needed a guitarist and a vocalist. Tony and Laze joined and very soon realized that the feel of Grit was very similar with Rocking Corpses and the band were "re-animated".

Collaboration of writing new songs was only held back by constant 'Spinal Tap-esque' problems with drummers, finally the issue was resolved and the band was complete.

Once we get passed the intro the rockin fun starts, great riffs epic death metal vocals which are shared with a Danzig style clean vocal, awesome mix of Death and Rock 'N' Roll.

The blues influence is present with 'Buried', one of those great riffs that just bounce along.

After another full on on rocker, comes 'Rocking Corpses II', very much in the Danzig area again, solid riffs, fun lyrics and a killer guitar solo.

'Drinking With The Dead' an acoustic C&W tune! Followed by another? well sort of because the Ghost of Johnny Cash is very much coming through my speakers and then the song explodes to some seriously heavy riffing!

We end with some full on Thrash/Speed Metal and 'War For Doom' completes a very enjoyable album with clever mix of styles and vocal work.

This albums music destined no doubt for films and television is one of the more interesting with a single contribution from Czech composer and musicologist Pavel Blatny providing ten wonderful minutes for a piece that was perhaps the thirty as eluded to in the title. At times the drumming is of near death metal speeds!

The rest of the album is comprised of pieces by Alain Petitgirard known as Alain Kremski, a French musician and composer of contemporary music, famed for his use of Asian instruments and creations using Tibetan bowls.

Overall a great album of abstract modern classical music that makes for disturbing listening.

Planet was a record label started here in Doncaster by David Moffitt in 1978.

It was a short lived lable producing one "rock" album by 'Pagan Bo' a "Folk" album by Charlie Webster and a "Punk" album.

Legend tells that 1000 copies were pressed, yet 200 copies were sold. Eventually in 1990 the rest of the albums were taken to the local dump!

Doncaster a fine heritage for rock music from John McLaughlin (Alexis Korner, Graham Bond, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc) to Lady June (Gong, Brian Eno, Vivian Stanshall, etc) But it is Punk that Doncaster is well known for. The Sex Pistols played at the Outlook club in september 1976 and as 'Tax Exiles' played an infamous show on 24.08.77 on the SPOTS tour. A good year for Punk in Doncaster as The Ramones, Adverts, Damned, Talking Heads, Sham 69 and a host of other well known names. There was even a local fanzine called 'The Lookout'.

Local band Vice Squad (NOT the Beki Bondage band) would headline the venue in March 78, also in 78 The Diks formed and had a small degree of success including a support slot for The Adverts and another band on this album The Negatives.

Institution D.O.L. is the power electronics / noise project of Austrian musician Matthias Beisl AKA Barbie B.

On the trails of the Great Beast, Aleister Crowley. 'The Thelema Tales' is a thematically in-depth audio document from a pilgrimage to Sicily in 2015 that Barbie B. did with his partner Meta Dolor. Here, INSTITUTION D.O.L. explores the mythos and mysticism of the man with six spacious tracks where smooth piano lines meet field recordings, from the Abbey and La Rocca, and electronica meets dark ambient. Four years of intense and devoted work has culminated and manifested into The Thelema Tales, which was originally released in a limited-edition CD version in 2020, and now finally seeing worldwide release on vinyl courtesy of EDGED CIRCLE PRODUCTIONS.

'The Abbey', superb mix of strange voices, beautiful piano and harsh (yet mellow) electronics. Features one of the original recordings of Crowley, its haunting and eerie.

More Crowley mixed into the second track, this one makes use of minimalist piano, ambient electronics and musique concrete samples.

'Ad Astra I and II', again superb mixture of minimalist keyboard work, musique concrete and other worldly vocal samples.

Coming out of the blue is 'Sex With A Seitanist' in which Barbie B starts with a sermon delivered by a hellfire preacher, then over simple piano he recounts his story, as the piece moves on we get another of Crowley's recordings and some chorus synth.

Finally, and all too soon, we arrive (as it were) with 'Exodus II', using some of the slightly harsher and disturbing keyboard style, together with more minimalist sounds to craft another atmospheric masterpiece.

I am blown away by this recording, I didn't know that people out there who still worked in the 'electroacoustic' and 'Musique Concrete' genres.
